Remap advice

I'm considering buying that Bluefin remap device for my FL2 TD4. I know very little about remapping and the device appears to be pretty easy to use. Plug it in, download the current map.. then connect to the computer and get the remap, nice and simple. My car isn't in warranty.

I realise the benefits include better mpg and higher bhp but is there any disadvantages by doing it? Anything I should consider before handing over £320 for it?

Just wanting to find out if it's worth doing or not. Question

Have you considered chip-tuning via an additional control device? It’s almost the same as remapping, except your car’s software remains intact. The device is usually a small box (matchbox size) that connects to car’s wiring, and “arranges” commands from the car computer.

I installed RaceChip Pro2 form these guys: http://www.racechip.com/ and I must say I was really surprised. The tiny box increased engine power and torque considerably. I don’t have the numbers since I didn’t put my car on the dyno, but acceleration and torque was noticeably improved. Manufacturers page claims RaceChip Pro2 increases the power form 160 PS to 208 PS…

The only measurable thing is fuel consumption. It went form cca 9 L/100 km to 7.8 L/100 km (sorry no MPG…).
Anyway, I would recommend remapping or chip tuning, but £320 is a bit on the pricey side.

I think to get the most out of a remap it might be worth having a session on a rolling road, rather than just downloading a map

beauty of the blufin is any issues you can reload the original map back on,ie before a service or if any warranty work is required

I hasn't considered chip tuning. Don't know a lot about this stuff but I had read about Bluefin on this forum, and notably the fact that it can be easily removed.

Does Bluefin and Racepro provide similar results? Or is one better than the other?

If I put my car on a rolling road and had them do the remap, can it be easily reverted back to original settings? Being able to undo the Bluefin in minutes is what is appealing to me. Maybe I can have some specialist remap done once I have gotten used to Bluefin, and my desire to want more increases lol

Thanks! Very Happy

With chip-tuning like Racechip’s, restoring original settings is simple. You just disconnect the device. Whole installation (and removing, if necessary) is pretty easy DIY job, but your local car electrician can install it. I don’t know much about Bluefin remapping, so I cannot compare both systems. But with Bluefin, I think you need a specialist to “hack” your car’s software, Racechip (or similar) on the other hand can be installed DIY style.

Bottom line: I would recommend either upgrade, especially for TD engines.

the blufin is connected to the diagnostic port and the original map is read, then connected to the internet and the map is sent to superchips, they then send back the improved map to your blufin device, then connect up to the diagnostic again and reload the improved map and away you go.
the blufin stores the standard and improved maps so either can be removed or reloaded at any time.

as the improved map is serial related to your vehicle it cant be loaded onto any other vehicle.

I ran Bluefin on my last Freelander TD4 for over 6 years and it was just brilliant with no downsides at all.

A re-map is for sure better than using a plug in tuning box. The beauty of the Bluefin is that as described above, it is tailored to your own car.

You don't get a generic map from Superchips. When the bluefin reads your ECU file, you then synchronise it with the Siperchips Server, and Superchips then modify your own specific map. So the file code name always remains the same. So you don't get a generic td4 map on your car. It is a modified version of your own specific map.
