Fraud - Probably card skimming

NatWest fraud team intervened today after someone tried to spend £800 on a cosmetics website in Hong Kong! Because I'm worth it Laughing

2x £10 O2 top up's went through ok this morning (I am with O2 on contract) but were flagged to be queried with me later just to be sure but then someone tried £800 online which was declined. They asked me about the £20 to O2 which I told them was not me and have now refunded it. They asked me if I disclosed my pin number or throw statements away without shredding (which I don't of course) amongst other questions and will send out some legal paperwork for me to sign and send back.

I spoke to the fraud guy and we agreed that the most probable source is a skimming device at a cash machine. 95% of online purchases are done by credit card when online.

All back to normal now and new card on the way. Good service from NatWest Thumbs Up LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Natwest are on the ball with mobile top up purchases. Had the same thing happen and the thieving bar stewards will try test purchases of £10 or £20 and if that works they will go to town before the card is declined.
In my case I found out that a national archery supplier I had used for years had its website hacked and they left everyone's card details available to the hackers. It's a pain when it happens but thankfully they have stopped yours quickly.

Always been happy with NatWest. Got 3 accounts with them plus credit card. I have got 2 other credit cards but NatWest gets most use. The online banking and the app is very easy to use and keep track of things.

P.S, those top up's were done at 6:45am with the big payment around lunch LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Excellent customer service then. They probably saw you have previous O2 purchases / DD / top up but on seeing two transactions in succession were going to contact you 'slow time', but when the Hong Kong lippy and powder bill was next they stopped the card and contacted you. Annoying but reassuring. Thumbs Up

After 90 minutes spent a branch trying to make a single payment, and failing (this after 6 weeks of letters), I fail to share your enthusiasm for Gnat Waste. 2011 MY SD4 HSE + planning some interesting stuff

All it takes is one bad branch to ruin it sadly. A bit like police who get stick for being useless but that depends on the quality of the service from the officer you deal with. One bad officer and they are all labelled as useless which is of course unfair on those hard working cops.

Plus you can't blame the police for soft sentences! Drifted off topic there... LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Back to the original thread and I had a card cloned as well recently, and O2 PayG was also used as a test transaction. Fortunately the £1800 transaction they tried after got declined.

The good news is that detection and correction processes are now so good that significant fraud is very difficult now, and actually losing money even less likely. But keep those PINs secret folks, and separate from the cards if you have to write them down. 2011 MY SD4 HSE + planning some interesting stuff

Top up your phone at Tesco/Asda etc while doing your shopping. Been doing this for getting on for 20 years and no troubles.

Bill,it's nothing to do with where you top your phone up - topping up a PayG phone is a good way to test if stolen card details are still valid before a riskier in-person purchase attempt. 2011 MY SD4 HSE + planning some interesting stuff

PayG means Pay as you go - exactly the kind of phone you have!

I think it's safe to say I'm at the other end of he technology spectrum. Between me and the wife we have 3 computers, 3 iPads, 2 iPhones, and a pair of kindles, and today's project is to install a Raspberry Pi in the freelander! 2011 MY SD4 HSE + planning some interesting stuff
