2013 Freelander 2 TD4 S Manual Fuji White
Land Rover Fixed Height Tow Bar/Alko stabilliser head

Does any one own the LR fixed height towbar Part No: LR007479 and use it with the latest Alko stabiliser hitches?

I appreciated it's not a big problem, a genuine Alko towball one can just be bolted in place of the Land Rover one. What would be a problem however is if I tip up to get my new caravan and I cannot get it home.

A definitive answer from someone would be much appreciated.

Thanks

You need Alko towball to get the required clearance for the stabiliser, also make sure you get all the paint off the ball and keep it clean (no grease) before using otherwise you' ll contaminate the stabiliser friction pads and they then wont work.

Thank you. It's a Shame the LR towball and electrical kit costing over £750 (fitted) does not have the correct towball for modern caravans.

Thanks again.

Are you sure it won't clear between the ball and the bumper, the ball is much lower than the main bumper Question p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

I must admit, it certainly looks like there would be ample clearance but I cannot get a straight answer from the Dealer.

I assume Trevorb1 you have the LR fixed height tow ball and a modern caravan, tried it and then got the Alko one?

I've done a quick search, but we are no further forward, one says it will be fine as they have done it, others have said they fitted the Al-Ko ball Confused

No worries. I will report back with the answer. I am purchasing the Caravan from a dealer so (hopefully) they will stock the Alko bar but I will try the LR one first. There looks to be ample room but without the Caravan, I just cannot check it.

You will need the Al-ko ball hook. If you compare the two, you will see the Al-ko has a slightly higher and more defined "neck" to allow greater clearance for the thicker Al-ko hitch at extreme angles. Bob 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Have fixed height towbar fitted, no issues with clearance to bumper, but you do need the Alko compatible tow ball to allow for the extra clearance needed for the stabiliser. On other forums there have been reports of hitches coming uncoupled when a standard tow ball has been used, why risk it for the sake of £20 or so.

Agreed, there will be no problems with clearance to bumper, but a standard fixed will have problems between the 'ball' and the 'flange' if a ALKO stabiliser is used.
Buy the slightly extended ALKO flanged towball.

I have had Landrover detachable tow bar on both LR2s and no problem with Alko hitches. Ample clearance and swan neck thin enough at bottom to allow alko hitch to swivel round should the trailer turn over without taking the car with it ! Thumbs Up Jaguar x-type sport gone
