Recovery kit

With winter approaching I'm looking to put some bits in the back. I've been searching on here re straps or ropes for recovery. What are peoples thoughts/ recommendations. Not thinking big off road recovery though Smile
Had a search on here but still a bit confused.

Thinking of one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tow-Strap-4-5mtr...230aa82026

Depends what you will be doing. I have the following:

Longer strap great if you are recovering another vehicle in snow or slippery conditions - gets you a safer distance away.

I bought the LR one which was £50, 3 ton limit, recovered my brothers 2.6 ton transit van a few times with it.

The only plus side to not having a spare is I can keep all that kind of stuff in the little cubby hole. Thumbs Up 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

Why the straps? I have a nylon halfords rope, used a few times with my disco. Should I be looking to replace it? I have no intension of serious recovering but only help neighbours up the bit of a hill in our village.

I like straps because they roll up neat. They are also properly tested........

The LR rope has its own bag which it goes in nice and neat, it acts as a warning flag when towing. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

Steve the one in your link is good I have one, don't forget 4.5Mtrs is the longest you can legally use to tow on road.

Hi Midland

I'm only thinking of 'gentle' recovery, not anything off road, just not sure whats best. Been searching, ropes seem to be preferable over strops. Thinking 8m to put some distance between vehicles, not considering towing any distance, more of a its winter, should keep something in back......

I'm not sure about this. The maximum towing device length used to be 1.5 which includes ropes / straps. However, the law does differentiate between towing devices and recovery devices. A recovery device can only be used to recover a vehicle to a safe place, and cannot be then used to tow a vehicle elsewhere. For example, recovering a vehicle from a ditch to a safe parking place, but not home, or a repair location.

I use a 4m strap, with a swl of 3 tons, as that will suffice to tow a vehicle weighing about 10 tons, through 6" of snow. Which is far more than I'd be doing, with a manual gearbox.... Laughing

Edit: After refreshing the grey matter, up to 4.5m is permitted, as long as it's clearly visible, from all directions. However 'clearly visible' is subjective, and the opinion of one traffic officer may differ from that of another. As sure as death and taxes, I'd end up dealing with the stroppy guy, who felt mine wasn't visible enough...... Rolling Eyes
