Creaking from the rear end is a problem that seems to affect quite a few early Freelander/LR 2s. Land Rover know about the problem which seems to be due to the rear suspension although it can sound as if it's coming from the rear trim panels. There is a fix but apparently the parts aren't available! If affected, check with your dealer and get in the queue for the bits!

FL2 mark one had it a 'twang' occasionally, FL2 mark two ........seems quite to date so maybe they have cured it

I've got this - bloody marvellous if there's a solution, it's driving me nuts (before you ask, no I don't have a steering wheel down my trousers!)

I'm off to the dealer tomorrow armed with this knowledge.

I was told by my dealer that there is a cure for rear suspension knock - they now add a bigger rubber stop at the suspension end if necessary.

Hope it didn't need a stop Def, mine used to happen in the manual gearbox car going for reverse with the car still rolling and then into first gear and moving forward. Just afew degrees of change you would hear a 'twang'????? Nothing serious just like a panel unclipping somewhere???? Very strange

my creaking seems to have got much worse today - Madmonk - do you know the technical details of the fix (just so's I sound 'informed' when I ring the dealer!

There's a Technical Bulletin LTB00048 to add spring isolators to eliminate the noise, but they don't have the parts in stock yet in the US. Have them lube the ends of the springs. This should help temporarily. It did on mine.

Evening All. Managed to solve the rear suspension noise on my 57 plate i6, so I hope this helps.....
Started off as a non-directional squeaking noise whenever I went over a bump, drove me mad, so took it to the garage. They couldn't locate the squeak, so I went home and spent a couple of hours removing the interior panels from the boot area. Rocking the vehicle from side to side made it squeak, and with the panels removed it appeared to be coming from the side /roof of the car. To cut a long story short, I worked out that the rear of the car was acting like a guitar body, and amplifying/changing the perceived source of the noise, but it seemed to come from the top of the spring where it's bolted onto the body. Sprayed lashings of WD40 onto the top of the spring from under the wheel arch, and miraculously the squeak disappeared.

Two weeks later, still no squeak, but has developed a knocking sound as if a pendulum was hitting the floor pan under the boot, left and right. Would do it when starting off (forward or reverse), and also when going over bumps. Again called garage, they hadn't a clue, and hadn't heard of any technical bulletins mentioned elsewhere. Rolled up sleeves, jacked up the rear of the car (leaving the rear wheels on so that the spring extended fully), and noticed that when pulling on the side of the spring, a knocking sound (boinging for want of a better word) could be heard. By spraying a mixture of Waxoyl and grease around the point where the spring meets the body, the noise was reduced considerably. Took it for a road test, knocking sound is no longer there. Also, that annoying creaking sound when you're just releasing the brakes has gone as well. My conclusion is that the hot summer we've experienced has dried the vehicle out, leading to squeaks between the suspension components and the body, and the acoustic properties of the boot area turn these into loud, difficult to locate knocks. It's a 20 minute job, and while WD40 works in the short term, it dries out too quickly, therefore you need a heavy based oil/grease. I hope this helps, and let me know if it cures your problem.
