2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Zermatt Silver
Popping noise from the rear when reversing.

I have a MY11 Freelander 2 HSE SD4 auto and recently I have noticed a popping noise coming from the rear of the vehicle when reversing, it can also be heard when moving forwards for the first few metres after reversing.

The car was due for its 2nd service so when I dropped it off at the dealers workshop I brought it to their attention. On picking the car up later in the day the dealer told me that they suspected a problem with the diff and that they would need the car back in the worksop for 2 days to carry out investigation and repair.

Two days later the dealer reported that they didn't know what the problem was and had requested technical help from LR, they also told me that they had tested three of their own vehicles and two other Freelander 2's were doing the same thing. I am waiting for the dealer to come back to me after their further investigations on their own vehicles.

This is my 3rd FL2 and I have not come across this before, also the courtesy FL2 that the dealer provided did not have this popping noise.

Has anyone else come across this and if so do you know what the cause of the popping noise is?

Thanks

Maybe you could be more specific than "a popping noise" ? .... Very Happy
Check the longitudinal links of the rear suspension and their connections.
Also you could check the rear brake pads and see if they have play in their sockets.

Thanks for your replies.

The popping noise could also be described as a pinking noise which sounds something like a thin metal strip/spring under tension being released and can be heard four or five times during reversing and again when moving forwards. Sorry I can't think how else to describe it. Question

Mine does it too. Its almost like a worn bushing sound, but it doesn't have the heavy clunk sound of that, its a lighter tink/pink sound.

To be honest, I'm not bothered with it. Can be something daft like the brake pads clinking in the caliper ... had that before.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this. Mine (my11) also makes this noise which is sort of a chirrup a few times in reverse then once or so when I start going forwards.
