rear diff exploding

Shocked
today a member of the freelander Italy forum was travelling on the motorway at 110km, when he suddenly heard a loud bang from the rear, with the rear wheels smoking like crazy and throwing the car left and right.
he skidded all over the highway and by a miracle he did not hit other cars or even the guardrail.
once stopped, there was a pool of oil by the rear, dripping from the diff.
he has a MY 2010 automatic, and had the diff done by LR under a month ago (so the latest procedure and software)
he is now seeking advice from a lawyer, as this was a life threatening situation !

i wonder if this diff story is more serious than first envisaged ?

Question

I would say either somethings not been tightened up properly after repair or something was left inside and its picked up and jammed in the gears, or its seized as there wasnt enough oil in it? But as it was done by LR I wouldnt think it as low on oil, more like something was forgotten on tightening it all back up?

Maybe the venting tubings were blocked.
I had a similar problem. The rear diff started leaking oil after he got a refurbish, it didn't explode.
There are 2 chambers in the diff, each has a venting tubing. On the end of the tubing there is a checkvalve.
If this checkvalve failes, there is a pressure buildup in the chamber which can cause it to explode.
The best thing to do is remove the tubings from the diff and blow in the tubings with some airgun. This way you will remove some dirt and will see if the checkvalve is working.
The checkvalves are located behind the rearwheels mudguard, 1 on each side.

UPDATE
I read in the other forum, that the car is back at the LR dealer, and they are having experts from LR themselves to look at it.
will keep you updated

Those rubbers are the ventlines. On the end there is a checkvalve. Each located behind a mudguard.
Mine started to push out oil via some overpressurewhole, don't know the exact name. If this overpressure thingy refuses to work and the checkvalves are blocked, then you can have an explosion.

UPDATE

LR stripped the diff, and repaired it. Their verdict was a rear bearing which was overtightened.
needless to say the owner put his car up for sale, as he did not trust the vehicle anymore, especially after the dangerous lock up on the highway at 110 Km/h.
with this, it's his 3rd diff repair !
Shocked

I was driving down the m40 towards London junction Banbury, I was in the centre lane travelling at 70mph with my wife and 3 month old baby when the rear differential exploded and locked the rear wheels throwing the car from left to right I could not control the car but luckily I managed to get us over to the hard shoulder as traffic was very light, this could of been a very different story! I am so upset as the diff has been repaired 3 times and I'm too scared to use it. Taking car to land rover colliers this morning! When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car

Shocked
this is serious. Surely LR should investigate these things further ?
do they realise that this defect can result in serious injury or even death ?

its not like an injector not working... what happens if the lock up occurs on the autobahn at speeds of 160 km/h ?
