Well, except for the bush fires, poisonous spiders and deadly snakes, this is an awesome place to live. These bushfires are the worst I've seen by a long way, and I've seen a lot. We are all very fire wise where I live in the Blue Mountains just west of Sydney, so it's rare for anyone to get hurt but the property damage is enormous this time. I only just saved my house with a bit of luck, it's ringed by charred earth and a moonscape where there used to be quite thick undergrowth. Metal fencing is worth it's weight in gold.

That fire is about 50kms away in the Zig Zag forest where we go 4wding a lot. The army has admitted they probably started it. The fire that hit us is in Winmalee and was started by power lines being brought down by high winds and sparking. The count now is 300 homes either damaged or completely destroyed. Word is that the 2 fires will meet and hit us again but there isn't a lot left to burn around my place.
