Cut out when engine cold

Has anyone had a similar problem to this with their Freelancer 2.2 ?
Our one cuts out for a brief second or so when the engine is cold. While driving the engine loses power and then regains it again immediately, the result is the vehicle lurches. The engine fault message flashes in the information panel on the dash and the door locks all make a clunking sound. After the engine warms up the fault never reappears until the next time it is cold. Starting can be difficult and the engine sounds like it is running on one or two cylinders although this is likely to be it cutting out and then firing back up while it is still turning. It's a 58 plate, 90k vehicle. Was wondering if it might be water in the fuel system that settles when stationery for a while. The egr valve had been stuck a while ago but some few hundred mile journeys seem to have cleaned the carbon and muck from it.

EGR, throttle body problem, glowplug related or any amount of things. If an engine fault message appeared then it should have logged a fault code which if read should narrow the search down a little.

interesting that the locks clunk away, that sounds like more than engine management? Never tell me the odds.

Indeed, if two different systems on two separate buses act strangely, then sounds more like a bad power connection somewhere...
