Has anyone done their own Rear Diff Repair

Hi I have the dreaded Diff whine I was going to buy the bits to do the low line repair, the dealer is telling me that you need about 5 special tools to do the repair, has anyone done the repair if so do you need these special tools. Has any one got any info on doing the job? Any help appreciated Thumbs Up

Mine has started to whine the last few days, need to get it checked, fortunately still under warranty.

I have not had to do the diff repair so my only comment is to be absolutely sure it is the diff causing the noise.

About a year ago I was convinced my diff was on its way out as I had lots of symptoms so took it my Indy for a second opinion and a quote.

They fitted a device with microphones and drove the car around in varying conditions - they kept adjusting their location etc and repeating. This pinpointed the whine to the nearside rear wheel bearing. A much cheaper fix and less involved than diff work. Bearing was replaced and whine disappeared - been fine since Thumbs Up

Thanks Donny the reason I think it's the diff i have swerved the car from side to side and the noise still stays the same, when I have had a wheel bearing fail on other cars when you change direction the noise normally changes?

Noise may not change if both wheel bearings are going, sounds implausible but both of my rears went at the same time. Jack the rear end up and check for play.

Foggy 19,
I changed one of the front wheel bearings recently on my wife's FL2. As you have previously stated, usually noise changes, when changing direction. Did on mine. Jacked it up, tested for play, there was none. Also passed an MOT. Changed bearing, now A1 Smile Not had any issues with rear diff, as yet. Landy has now gone.

Interestingly, the service manager who rang me today indicated my car was just within the VIN range of cars that can have a defective bearing, anyone know what this range is?
