I have a dvd player and LR headrest screens. As an alternative, can I just put the video yellow plug to the screens and plug in the red and white audio plugs into the 3.5mm aux socket (with an adaptor cable) and run the sound through the car stereo in aux mode (MY 2013), instead of using the wireless headphones.

Yes. I use yellow video out to screen consul in, and red and white audio out to 3.5mm jack in to the aux in socket. Just using a cheap invisua in car dvd located under passenger seat with remote. Also use a belkin ipad video out cable as well. Both work very well with mickey mouse.
