United Kingdom 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Santorini Black
spare wheel size

recently purchased a TD4 auto GS 09MY and it is shod with 235/65/17 Continentals, however the spare is 205/60/15. This would put the dia at about 87mm smaller if I have worked this out right. The dealer says its OK! the spare is often smaller. However its not a space saver but full size and at 15" cannot be right, right? I can see I am in for an argument with the dealer on this. Anyone back up my case? It was not an LR dealer but non the less a big outfit.

I have not heard of a 15" wheel on a FR2. I wouldn't have thought it would fit the car (have you tried it?) Most spares are 17" steel and the tyre size can vary. If you're lucky the spare is the same size, so you can transfer it to an ally wheel in due course and oput it on the car before it gets too old. Doesn't work for you, obviously!

just measure the steel wheel and it is 15" I don't think it really belongs to this car at all. My LR dealer says 15" should not be used but seemed uncertain what size original wheel would have been supplied and went onto the subject of space savers. However this should be a full size wheel.

235 is the circumference isn't it, 205 is a smaller rolling wheel the car will be dangerous to drive IMO Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Pretty sure that's not the correct wheel. You may be able to get some come-back from the dealer, otherwise look out for a proper alloy wheel on e-bay or on this site. Sorry I've just sold my two, but they come up fairly regularly!

Smallest approved wheel for Freelander 2 is 16 inch. My 2007 Freelander 2 had a spare that was 235/65/17 the same as the main wheels but on a steel rim and limited to 50 mph. On my current one I specified a full sized spare and got one thar matched the others exactly.

My guess is the 15 inch wheel will not fit if you try it and is certainly not a LR approved wheel for a Freelander 2.

Just had a quick look on e-bay. There are a couple on sale for £100 pounds+. However you can sometimes get them for much less - someone recently sold 4 wheels for that price. If you do buy make sure they are the correct wheel - they should look the same as yours and preferably be the same diameter (GS 17" are pretty standard). Freelander 1 wheels will NOT fit.

my understanding is 235/65/R17 gives the width as 235 and 65 is the percentage ( 65%) that the tyre height is of the width. In this case 65% of 235 = 153mm The R17 is the wheel dia. However the result is the same I think to have 2 different dia tyres on the same axle could be very detrimental. I think I will source my own and then be happier in the case of a puncture.

Hi J77 I think you are right and the dealer put it in. It would possibly fit a FL1.

2nd hand alloy with 235/65/17 now in place with 5mm tread on it so the problem is sorted. this leaves me with a 15" 5 stud steel rim with 205/60/15 on it ( only 3mm tread though) if anyone needs a spare for a FL1. Also the dealer gave me a complete tyre repair kit and 12V compressor brand new but this is from an Audi, Volkswager, Skoda.Seat car, again if anyone is interested I no longer need and can deal on this.
