2007 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Auto Stornoway Grey

Freelander 2 Autobox Whines

Hi folks - I have noticed my Autobox has been getting noisier & noisier just lately. Its operation is not affected - changes up & down are as smooth as ever. Perhaps its time for an oil change?

Are you sure it's the gearbox? The PTU is a more likely candidate IMO. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Ah, now not so sure - it is a noticeable whining which changes with road speed. It seems to be coming from the gearbox (noticeably towards the front end).
As I said, the operation of the box is nice & smooth - no snatching or clunks from it. Its the sort of noise a worn bearing might make.

If the wining is relative to road speed it probably isn’t the gearbox as sounds linked to that would be relative to engine speed. Sounds can seem to come from the other end of the car from the components that are actually causing the noise. Get some “chassis ears”, microphones that can be attached around the car and monitored by a passenger while driving.

Also... the cabin blower motor can make whining noises that sound a whole lot like drivetrain stuff, even varies with engine rpm (presumably due to slight alternator voltage output variations).

That's easy to rule out, turn the HVAC off.

Hello all, thanks for the replies - I have now listened more carefully & the whine is related to the gears as it goes up and down but, apart from changing pitch, is equally as loud in all gears. I'm still puzzled but do suspect its the gearbox at fault - maybe a worn O/P shaft bearing? It does sound as if its going to be expensive............

Stethoscope on a hoist but, pretty sure it's the PTU unless you are having shifting issues?
