Vehicle weight

Just reading my registration document and it states 'Mass in service 1958Kg.
Is that the total weight of the car? So I can tow a caravan max. 1664kg?

OK..........I know I should be on caravan site! Whistle 2013 Dynamic Santorini black

yes max tow weight is 2000kg, but a rough rule of thumb for caravans is to tow a caravan with a mtplm of no more than 85% of the kerb weight of the tow vehicle.

freelander max tow capacity = 2000kg

kerb weight on my xs is about 1775kg

85% of 1775kg = 1509kg

so my theoretical limit is 1509kgs, but you can tow up to 100% of the vehicles weight if you are experienced, i tow a hymer swing weighing 1600kg mtplm

maximum technical permissible laden mass.

by the time i have put 3 more people in the car and a boot full of gear and 4 bikes on it the car will be well over the 1840kgs i would need to get an 85% match.

i know this doesnt directly answer your question but it may help you choose what you need to know. My11 freelander 2, xs, Manual, 18" hse sparkles, sidesteps, privacy, zermatt silver metallic, almond nutmeg alacantra, twin electric towbar

Isn't Mass in Sevice, the
weight of the vehicle,
+ an allowance of 75kg for the driver,
the weight of an 80% full tank of fuel
plus tools = a jack and a wheel brace for some and a can of Jollap and compressor for he others. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

Never too sure what the mass in service is, so I work on kerb weight and max vehicle weight, and max tow weight.

Chap on the same street said to my wife , " he a bit cautious isn't he ". Because I won't tow a caravan with a car that is way too light and a nose weight that is 20kg below the caravan hitch weight.

My middle names are "play it safe"

This is the first car I will have towed with that is above the 85% rule of thumb, I am actually at 90% of the cars kerb weight, but only 80% of the cars towing capacity. My11 freelander 2, xs, Manual, 18" hse sparkles, sidesteps, privacy, zermatt silver metallic, almond nutmeg alacantra, twin electric towbar

I am with Andy (ad210358) on this. I would assume it was vehicle weight.

Bambi, where did you get 1775kg from?, as it seems light compared to
mine. Have a look at your reg. doc. see what your mass in service is. 2013 Dynamic Santorini black

Gravon, 1775kg is the kerb weight, basically car fuel and driver.

Kerb weight new from 1785kg
Max laden weight. 2505kg
Max payload. 550kg
Tow bar nose weight 150kg *. This can be increased to 250kg but you must drop that extra 100kg off the payload. To keep you inside the max laden weight.

Total 2485kg just 20 kg of max, this would allow for the difference for a hse to base spec.

I don't work to mass in service stuff like that, just kerb weight , max vehicle weight and axle loads.

All figures pitched from Lr web site. My11 freelander 2, xs, Manual, 18" hse sparkles, sidesteps, privacy, zermatt silver metallic, almond nutmeg alacantra, twin electric towbar

I have absolutely no idea what mass in service is, the figure quoted is an odd figure,

I can get 1955. If yours is an hse

1805kg + 150kg nose weight but that makes no allowance for payload. So not sure where they get the figure from.

Kerb weight is car, fuel and 75kg for driver. So in theory 1530 to 1560 is the recommended max weight for a caravan. But as the car has a tow capacity of 2000kg and a nose weight of 150kg these are what you can work within and still be legal.

The nose weight is why I went for a freelander over every other car in its class as the rest max out at 80-100 kg

My van has a nw of 100kg and I need to carry the bikes as well on a tow mounted bike carrier so needed the extra nw. My11 freelander 2, xs, Manual, 18" hse sparkles, sidesteps, privacy, zermatt silver metallic, almond nutmeg alacantra, twin electric towbar

Kerb weight is the vehicle with some fuel, no driver or passengers are included in Kerb Weight. Thumbs Up p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior
