Chris you DO NOT need TR to take you Freelander2 offroad, what I would recommend is that if you are going to have fun offroad then the automatic version is preferable and you won't need to worry about cooking the clutch.

TR adjusts engine ecu mapping and gives you a few electric goodies that are "nice to have" but not necessary to enjoy offroading - it's only been in the last 5 years that Land Rovers have had really fancy electronics and Land Rovers have been going off road since 1948 without them! You might get to a few places with TR that you won't get to without it but then if you get there without TR it feels much more rewarding as you have used your own skills rather than the computer doing it. How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?
