Is a clunky gear stick normal?

Hi,

I've been meaning to ask this question for a while. I'm able to change gear with relative ease; no gears appear to be sticking and there is no play in the stick, but the 'feel' is generally clunky and cheap I would say.

Would you guys say that this was an accurate description of a working FL2 gearbox/stick or do you think there is something wrong?

Cheers
J

The change is certainly well-defined and perhaps a little notchy, but personally I wouldn't describe it as clunky or cheap. It probably depends on what you're used to - having been used to the 'stirring porridge' feel of many 4x4 gearboxes I find the FL2's change very good. It's certainly a lot better than the Forester I had previously.

Best defined gear change I've used. You certainly know that you are changing gear rather than the stirring porridge feeling of other cars I've driven.

Some find it fine, others find it clunky or as someone put it... a dark art from 1st to 2nd.......

I have a 2009 GS and I have never been able to get the hang of the gear change, to the point of not wanting to stop because I will have to get from 1st to 2nd again, took it to the dealer who said they could not find anything wrong with it.

I have driven a few land rovers in my time, including a series 3 and it had a better gear change than my FL2.

I find it prefers a slow change, I cant seem to get the engine speed right going up the gears to get a smooth gear change.

Try going into snow mode and see if you find it easier, I find it a better/easier to change gear and not look like I have just passed me driving test!

I've drove around 30 cars (test drives) before opting for the freelander 2 and it is notchy however i like the way it feels. Most cars feel like a sponge. A land rover is a mans car Twisted Evil if you wanted a soft executive car you should have gone for a lexus or a BMW Evil or Very Mad When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car

Have you managed to have a drive of another FL2 to see how that feels? What you're describing just doesn't sound right - I don't even have to think about the change, it just happens nice and smoothly. What kind of revs do you change up at? There's not much point in going above 3K unless you're in a real hurry, and changing earlier might make the change a bit smoother. Overall, though, my FL2's is the best change I've had in a 4x4.

Jimmack,
If you gear stick sounds slightly squeaky too, on operation. You could try giving the gear cable linkage an oil. It adjoins the gear box, located under the battery area. Get someone from inside the car to move the gear stick, you will then see the linkage moving. My gear stick was squeaky on my 58 FL2, until I oiled linkage. Worked a treat.
Found this info off this forum Smile Landy has now gone.

Our gear change used to be a bit notchy, changing fron first into second. But when the clutch was changed (under warranty), it improved lots.
