Surely anything more than 6 gears will mean constant up/down changes, it will have to be completely seamless or it will be a pain in the a Censored
Is it really needed Rolling Eyes , perhaps they should go back to the DAF stepless and improve on that. I know some modern cars like the Toyota have this system but its too high reving.

It's all about fuel consumption, not driveability. Manufacturers are doing everything they can to squeeze out extra fractions of a mpg, and it's not improving the cars any. As you say, 6 is plenty. Even LR's use of the Haldex unit is about fuel consumption - dynamically a 50/50 split works just fine both on and off road (as ably demonstrated by Subaru and many others), and the Haldex is there just to make the car mainly FWD on road and squeeze out a little extra mileage from a litre of diesel. And all driven by politics. Mad.

I was watching a review of the new Forester the other day - that's going to be available with CVT, in the States at least. It would be interesting to drive it just to see what it's like, without actually expecting to like it.

hi

dont forget its also about lowering emissions as well, manufactures think that both fuel economy and emissions is the first thing we consider when looking at a new car, also it gives them bragging rights over the competition and also they can put a small green sticker on the boot Rolling with laughter to say look i am environmentally green 1995 P38 now dead

It's more that manufacturers are being forced by regulation and punitive tax regimes (for the buyer!) to do something about fuel consumption and emissions. It's a pity the agendas involved are almost purely political, with little grounding in reality. Crying or Very sad
