It's all about fuel consumption, not driveability. Manufacturers are doing everything they can to squeeze out extra fractions of a mpg, and it's not improving the cars any. As you say, 6 is plenty. Even LR's use of the Haldex unit is about fuel consumption - dynamically a 50/50 split works just fine both on and off road (as ably demonstrated by Subaru and many others), and the Haldex is there just to make the car mainly FWD on road and squeeze out a little extra mileage from a litre of diesel. And all driven by politics. Mad.

It's more that manufacturers are being forced by regulation and punitive tax regimes (for the buyer!) to do something about fuel consumption and emissions. It's a pity the agendas involved are almost purely political, with little grounding in reality. |
