I suspect the spring has failed, don't think you can get the spring though, you may have to try to adapt one |

Thanks both, spring had failed, u shaped with 2 coiled sections, the spring had failed on one of the coiled sections. losing me a 1/4 of the total length of the u shaped spring.

Mona Geeza - Just had my auto gearbox refurbed couple months ago, mine gave in on me at 38,000 miles and 4yrs and 8months old.

I read this thread with interest as i also have a FR2 auto. but i can't find any situation when i need to use the button on the gear shift. I can Engage the gear lever in all required positions without the need to press the button in even though the manual says i should need to. It does not give me any problems but it does not seem right. |

I would lift up the surround and re-make the plug/socket connection underneath, if that is not your problem then the lock switch is permanently made or the lock solenoid is the problem.

Roland(90 - Thats not right I would pull of the gear stick nob and refit.

The gear stick will lock ok when in park with the engine off. However its the button on the back of the stick thad does not appear to do anything. |
