Those of you with a MY13, try pulling it on whilst driving normally...observe how quickly you stop dead in a straight line! Foraging near Gaydon....

How do you make it come on automatically?

When I switch my car off it does not auto engage.

Cheers

It should apply automatically on power off. Does on mine. * GONE. GS TD4 Manual MY2013. Orkney Grey with privacy, cold and clearview packs, armrests (a must!) and a spoiler.

In a Manual Freelander it applies automatically, In an automatic Freelander it usually requires manual application - at least it does on my one at work.

Richard is correct in that the auto gearbox car needs to have the EPB applied manually whereas the manual box car automatically applies it on switching the engine off. It's in the handbook, but all seems a bit ironic! Anyone know the auto doesn't apply the handbrake itself? There must be a reason. 2016 BMW X3 30d SE in red

EPB is a right pain. Sure, when it's all nice and new, from the drivers point of view, it's a delight.
'Till it goes wrong with age. And often does.

My pet hate of all vehicle features. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

My mate has just bought an 11 month old FL and within a month the handbrake failed twice, new actuators fitted under warranty, anyone else had problems? Question

With the auto if the car is parked somewhere & if it's not possible for it roll into something like in the garage I just leave the car in park and don't bother with the handbrake.

If the car is on a hill I use the handbrake & also point the wheels towards the gutter in the appropriate direction for up or down hill. Even then it's generally possible to use the gutter to replace the brake.

We have '4WD size gutters' here, about 180 mm high (about 7 inches) & often more higher, especially in country towns. The disadvantage is the high gutters kill rims! Already got my first scratch, but then there isn't a car in Australia without stuffed rims unless you have extra wide tires. After 19 years with the previous car the rims were completely mangled, not a 'corner' that was not damaged.

Virtually all the Freelanders are auto, so one in general doesn't need to use the handbrake, but we will pay with our rims! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
