The future of UK winters

So I go and regenerate into a mere mortal with the Fiesta (albeit with plans to get winter tyres next winter) and we have the coldest March since 62 and the worst snowfalls in some parts of the country since 79 or for 50 years in the peak district.

Way back last Autumn, Joe Bastardi said the UK could have its worst winter for 50 years and he has pretty much been bang on for at least some places. Not pure luck either because the winter before, he correctly called a milder than average winter.

So, what does the future hold do we reckon? Is cold the way its gonna be or is this colds last hurrah and mild winters will dominate with snow a thing of the past?

Interesting one. I reckon colder and even with the odd mild winter here and there I think severe winters could be the norm. The jet stream chuffed off south last summer hence the rain. Look what happens when it does it in winter! 60 plate SD4 XS, Stornoway Grey, Arm rest pack

I reckon the weather is all in a cycle pattern. 20 years or so of milder winters now its going to be a good few years of colder winters. There has been lots of news items recently about global warming or the lack of it, flooding is on the increase but is that because houses are being built on flood plains and a lack of money being invested in proper drainage schemes?

I was watching the local weather today (BBc Look North), the weather chap said that the jet stream is firmly enbedded in Spain which means its could be cold right into the second week of April, yesterday he said the east winds were blowing striaght into Canada from the UK, something he said that doesnt happen often.

I reckon cold winters will be here for a good few winters. I only wish we had some decent summers!! Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

I don't want to sound like an old fart (I'm not - not yet anyway!) but I think we've lost track of what a cold winter is! Winters were colder when I was growing up, with more snow than we typically have these days and villages often cut off. It caused fewer problems, though, as there were fewer cars on the roads and people were more used to it and more accepting of it. And if we go back to the early part of last century I've seen photographs from around here of drifts 10-15 feet and more deep. Not only that, they'd been cleared so the road beneath it was open again. (I can't find it now, but somewhere I've seen a picture of someone standing on the roof of a car with the snow still as high as he is!)

So, basically, we've all gone soft 'cos the winters now are so mild, and getting milder!

I see no sign of climate change whatsoever

In the 70's 80's all the talk was we were heading for an ice age..now we're heading to boil dry....honest answer is no-one knows...other than mother nature

I remember bad winters and hot summers...I'm sure we'll see them again...as well as mild winters and wet summers.

Mother Nature has this habit of correcting herself...just wait for months of drought...to be followed by months of rain.

The freaks used to call it global warming..then that failed so they switched to climate change when it's been proved the world is not warming - of course climate changes if it didn't we'd still be in an ice age and there weren't many coal fires then - bunch of muppets.

Hey don't worry we closing all our coal fired power stations, the nuclear ones are heading for decommissioning and gas ones are not far behind....so we won't be able to see the weather forecast without electricity..unless of course this is one of the 14 days a year when the wind power turbines might be working.

Winters..some are mild some a cold...enjoy the variety

Think most of the big freeze was in '63. It started in Dec '62 and went on until March '63. I was a little boy then who battled from my village to school only to find it was closed! Now they stay at home with their x box if there is a slightest hint of snow. The snow was so deep that i walked on top of hedges as a short cut. Our village was cut off for several weeks, yet the local slopes used for sledging by us young 'uns, became the socal hub of the village with trestle tables of hot soup, mince pies etc on offer. At the time, i wished it could go on forever. Everyone seemed so happy. At least to me.
Folk shared coal and food with those who were low and we got fresh milk from the village farmer.
I'm sure the oldies must have moaned, but i look back on those days with very fond memories. It seemed that the adverse weather bought out the best in community spirit.

A fine example of us Brits making the best of a bad situation. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.
