My car's looking quite clean at the moment. All the rain and slush has done a pretty good job of removing all the mud and road salt. It looks like I actually washed it this month... Smile

Reeventu,

In a way you are correct, I will not however be doing 90% of what you listed, I will change its tyres when they need replacing, the wheels will stay stock, the lights will stay as they are, I may change the bulbs when they blow, I will try to keep it clean, actually when trade in time comes it does work, on my d3 just sold one of the main points raised but friends and dealers was that my paintwork still had that just out of the showroom feel and look too it, that you only get with polish and wax.

If we go out we like to get in a clean car, not drag trousers and dresses over dirty sills.
I take it you don't clean your house or have a cleaner in as unless you live in a stately home you live in just an average hack. It's just an extension of good maintanence and looking after something that is quite expensive to some of us, even if it is a ordinary hack.

Pab,

had landrover not changed with the times they would no longer be trading, we have one car that we need to do all things, be it take us out, take us to work (site based) , to the tip, tow the caravan, I choose a Land rover. I could choose any other car but I have owned land rovers is one form or another for the past 26 yrs. and without doubt the new ones are far more competent off road, on road, safer, more fuel efficient. So even if I don't use it for what it's intended, oh hold on what was it intended for, that's it it is designed to be a family vehicle utilising land rovers four wheel drive system to enable you to go about your daily lives unaffected by inclement weather, ground conditions or any other conditions that may cause duress to drivers of less competent vehicles.

My comments are not directed at anyone specific. I read the forum regularly and am just surprised that there are so many threads on the matters I commented on.

My car is regularly washed either by me or 'Eastern Europeans' ( Polish actually), and this is based on the current weather and how dirty it gets, maybe 2/3 times a week or maybe once a month.

Neither I nor my wife like a car that is dirty so it is kept clean , and also always garaged.

I will ignore the comments about our home as it is totally irrelevant to the discussion.

However we should get things in perspective, these cars are fairly slow , posh trucks no more no less and yes I prefer my 3year old HSE to the Mercedes / BMW and Jaguars that I have owned over the past 20+years.

I just do not see the point in spending shed loads of 'hard earned' on such a highly depreciating item.

BUT I ALSO FIRMLY BELIEVE IN EVERYONE TO THEIR OWN, this is just not for me.

I'm of the same opinion as Reeventu when it comes to washing the car, it's one bucket of suds, one brush and a hose pipe. Even then it has to be sunny and warm otherwise it's the Eastern Europeans, I like my car to be clean inside and out but I am lazy Laughing

In fact I'm going to pay to have it professionally valeted this year because Pegleg noticed all my self made 'swirls' and the bodywork did look crap beside of his.

I also agree with his last sentence, if you want to spend time on your motor then good for you, there is nothing wrong in having great pride in anything you have.

May your buckets never run dry Thumbs Up

That's fine, I wasn't taking it personally, just as a whole, what does the speed of the vehicle have to do with it, yes the car is depreciating, all cars depreciate, a few then start to make money, a well looked after series one will be worth 10-20x it's original purchase price, a Badly looked after one is almost worthless.

Also it's not a truck unless you are North American , even then a freelander would be described as an SUV,

Well said EY, I like my car to be clean but I would not spend all of the weekend cleaning it, I wash it when it's sunny, otherwise it's down to the local HAND car wash.

Thanks for all the replies, and keep discussing. Thumbs Up

I guess my comment re speed was wrong, what I mean is that this is just a method of
transport , basically nothing to get excited about.

It does everything very well and I repeat I like it,but there are other cars that might be not so good for a day to day car BUT have that certain something.

I mentioned truck (SUV if you like) because that is what it is , not a sports car, not high performance car , not a luxury car (sorry but the Freelander is no more luxury than a top range Ford)

Perhaps others see it differently, and I respect that.

Whatever opinions others have , I still do not see going overboard on spending the money on bits and bobs that no one else notices or over indulgent cleaning. To me ( and I guess only me ) it is just a waste of cash

I don't spend money on "unnecessary" modifications, just things I like. I see your point in having a car for transport, not pleasure. I enjoy my cars and try to care for them as best as I can because I'm a "car person".

Your quite right there, it's not a luxury car, it is a family vehicle but that doesn't lesson the reason for looking after it, I am in the process of stepping down from a disco 3 to a freelander, but having owned jags xj12, xj6, beemers 5 series 3 series, the freelander ( and currently I don't own one ) has exactly the same equipment as these so called luxury cars.

I don't spend all weekend cleaning , but I did wash and polish the d3 myself using good quality products, and once a year just after the holiday I used to give it a full clean.

Somedays I go and clean the car just to get out and clear the old grey matter , I actually enjoy it. Some friends I have never clean theirs.
Each to their own. Thumbs Up
