So I go and regenerate into a mere mortal with the Fiesta (albeit with plans to get winter tyres next winter) and we have the coldest March since 62 and the worst snowfalls in some parts of the country since 79 or for 50 years in the peak district.

Interesting one. I reckon colder and even with the odd mild winter here and there I think severe winters could be the norm. The jet stream chuffed off south last summer hence the rain. Look what happens when it does it in winter! 60 plate SD4 XS, Stornoway Grey, Arm rest pack

The planet's been progressively getting warmer since the last ice-age hasn't it? Why the surprise amongst these so-called educated environmental experts? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I reckon the weather is all in a cycle pattern. 20 years or so of milder winters now its going to be a good few years of colder winters. There has been lots of news items recently about global warming or the lack of it, flooding is on the increase but is that because houses are being built on flood plains and a lack of money being invested in proper drainage schemes?

I don't want to sound like an old fart (I'm not - not yet anyway!) but I think we've lost track of what a cold winter is! Winters were colder when I was growing up, with more snow than we typically have these days and villages often cut off. It caused fewer problems, though, as there were fewer cars on the roads and people were more used to it and more accepting of it. And if we go back to the early part of last century I've seen photographs from around here of drifts 10-15 feet and more deep. Not only that, they'd been cleared so the road beneath it was open again. (I can't find it now, but somewhere I've seen a picture of someone standing on the roof of a car with the snow still as high as he is!)

Think most of the big freeze was in '63. It started in Dec '62 and went on until March '63. I was a little boy then who battled from my village to school only to find it was closed! Now they stay at home with their x box if there is a slightest hint of snow. The snow was so deep that i walked on top of hedges as a short cut. Our village was cut off for several weeks, yet the local slopes used for sledging by us young 'uns, became the socal hub of the village with trestle tables of hot soup, mince pies etc on offer. At the time, i wished it could go on forever. Everyone seemed so happy. At least to me.
