My 58 FL2 td4 does not seem to be the best first time starter from cold. It was -2 this morning, started engine. Turned over quickly, tried to fire up quickly, but then cut out. Re-fired up again & started up OK. This seems to happen often when starting from cold, 0c or below.
Could this be a problem relating to the glow plugs? Or is this within the realms of normal cold starting for a FL2?

I am sure that there used to be better instructions on the search page, showing explanations regarding + and other things, or is my memory thinking of another site?

I appreciate it is annoying to have to point out the search feature, but can we not do it in a slightly more supportive way? We are here to pool resources and information after all

I've found searching via google turns up more of what you want, try searching "freel2 cold starting" it finds more useful threads than using the site search facility and searching for "cold starting"

Try using the site search facility by filtering out threads you don't need and search as posts rather than topics.
It has been flagged up with Martin too, maybe it needs tightening up a little?

The landy starts, but then cuts out. No delay prior to starting.

Thanks for info. My first d, plenty of exp with petrol engines, Very little with the d’s. Had a good look through the site now. Virtually no delay prior to starting, so may be glow plug related. I'll put it on the repair list  Landy has now gone.

You may have already found this from your search, but if the car isn't introducing any delay before it starts cranking then the glowplugs won't have time to do their pre-heating and it will probably start in a rather lumpy way. Try the following:-

Insert key fob
Without pressing down on the clutch (manual gearbox) or brake (auto box), press and hold the 'start' button until the dash lights come on. This should initiate the glow plugs.
Wait for perhaps 5 seconds or so (gives time for the glow plugs to heat up)
Depress clutch or brake pedal
Press 'start' again and hopefully the old girl should fire up a bit more readily.

Hope this helps. If it doesn't, it might suggest that the glow plugs are not working very well. In really cold weather, you can repeat the first three stages a couple of times to cycle the glow plugs more than once.

I've done the work on my 2010GS. Perhaps buy two new glows before you start and pick tools up.

Thanks for taking the time to post this information; she started this morning, just lumpy for the first few seconds. Then OK. My wife mainly uses the landy. I will follow your suggestions & see how it goes Couldn't seem to find this info in the owners manual.

Have a local independent who would change all the g plugs for £130 all in. Having MOT done in April there, along with front wheel bearing/hub replacement. I will she how she goes until then.

You won't find those instructions in the manual! According to the manual, they should start in the way that you and your lady wife are using. However, when I moaned to the dealer after first getting ours and experiencing poor winter starting, they said that the way that I've described was 'coorect'. I didn't point out to them that it wasn't in the manual. A lot of people on here have had the drivers at the Land Rover Experience recommend using the way I've described.

Seems a bit daft having an automatic start / glowplug system that doesn't wait long enough before it starts cranking!

Car manufacturers never seem to make it easy for us. Not that ours will be seeing a dealer again I've not had the best start with our Landy over the last 6 months, but still sticking with her. When 0 & below will try as you have suggested.
Bought myself a high lift trolley jack last week, had all the wheels off to inspect brakes. All looking good. That's a bonus.

I tried the new starting procedure this morn, started very well & fired up first time. Wasn't quite as cold this morn, had around 4" of snow over night though. Will try it again tomorrow, going to be alot colder tonight.

Past master,
I certainly did, have jacked up a few vehicles in my time already had a trolley jack, but didn't lift high enough. If I were to do any work on Landy after jacking up (brakes etc), would use axel stands too.
I was amazed my the weight of the Freelander & the wheels Compared to my Astra
