Miles in tank remaining constantly changes.

Left earlier today to visit the Mo-in-Law. She lives about 15 miles away, 13 of which is on a dual carriageway and I normally go 60-70mph. When I set off, I was showing 279 miles left in the tank. Approx 30 miles later, instead of having 249 miles left, I've now got 324 miles left and when I brimmed the tank on Friday, it was showing 330 miles available and I've already covered just over 100 miles. I'm assuming it constantly estimates the miles left in the tank based on current driving style. Is that correct? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Present: Audi A3 S Line.

It's based on average mpg so far, I think.

That's good to know then. On my previous 2 cars, a Focus and a Golf, the remaining miles were fixed from when you first started the car and it never took your current driving style into consideration. Average mpg was reset on start up on both those cars too. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

For the range value the car needs two things:
1. fuel tank level value
2. average fuel consumption

The fuel tank level value (1) is calculated by the instrument cluster every 200 meters of vehicle travel.

The average fuel consumption (2) is computed this way:
The difference between the last two fuel tank level values (1) are used to determine how much fuel has been used. This value is then averaged over the last 31 miles (50 kilometers) of travel.

The range value is then calculated as a division between the fuel tank level value (1) and the average fuel consumption value (2).

I know you are right in what you say, because this morning I have found this reference in Topix.

It does surprise me though, because since I have had my car (6 months) the average fuel consumption figure on the dash has always been very close to my own calculation of average mpg on a brim-to-brim calculation. (I reset the computer each time I refill). It doesn't seem to reflect the mpg in the last 30 miles.

To put it another way, within the same tankful I have been able to rationalise the reported mpg against the journeys made e.g. if i do say 150 miles of driving on local roads I get say 29mpg reported average mpg. If I then do the next 150 miles on motorway at say 37mpg, the reported average mpg creeps up, so that by the time the tank is nearly empty the average mpg is 33. This was what I was expecting on the assumption that the average was calculated on consumption since the computer was reset.

Surely if the avg mpg is calculated in the way described by Alex and Topix, my reported avg mpg at the end of 300 miles should be 37mpg i.e. because the last 30 miles was on motorway at 37mpg?

Pete
