Alloy/Tyre Sizes For Winter

Been looking for some s/h 17" alloys on ebay for next winter"s tyres ( yes the one after this ) , not much about but seen some FL2 16" alloys but not much scope in 215 75 16 winter tyres .
Anyone gone down to 16's for winter and can recommend , or shall I keep looking for the 17's with 235 65 17 on ?

Thanks

I have never bothered to be honest. I haven't seen a winter yet bad enough to warrant it. Yes I know winter tyres are better than summer tyres. But as FL2 has all season tyres anyway, I don't see the point. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. I'd have to agree with Mav, a good general tyre is fine for this country, pretty much all year.
I lived in west Germany years ago and spent 3 or 4 months down the bottom in proper snow(winter conditions) and we ran on standard tyres OK.
The Germans liked to have two sets of tyres but this was proper snow(winter conditions) so could see the point.

If you feel the need for a specialist winter tyre for the odd couple of weeks we may get some weather then I hear verdestein "Wintracs" in 235/65/17 are a popular choice.

Unfortunately, many people still seem to think that winter tyres are only to do with snow - i've even seen them called 'snow tyres' !! Yes, the sipes offer much improved grip and stability on snow but they are also have a winter - biased compound that will give you better grip and shorter stopping distances once the temperature is down below 7 degrees C - irrespective of whether snow is present or not. Depends on your attitude to risk really, local average temperatures and also what your annual mileage is. FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green

Winter tyres

I don´t know how your winters have been recently, but here in Sweden, Stockholm area, it have been three quite long winters in a row, with between 20 and 70 cm of snow. 5 December 2012 we had 65 cm i 7 hours and that was a little irritating. In that case you need good winter tyres, not just for driving thru the snow but more for proper braking and for not sliding of the road. I have two sets of tires on my cars, Bridgestone Blizzard 235/65/17 on the Landy that works really good. But Nokian Hakkapelitta vid studs (good grip)on the Alfa is better on ice. We have a law that forces us to change to winter tyres from the 1 of December and have them on until the last of Mars.

BTW, I saw on the telly that you people in Wales had a lot of snow right now. There was a sheep farmer digging in the snow to release the stupid animals that were buried under the snow. Strange.. Rolling Eyes “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

I agree, why people call them snow tyres I'll never know. I can see the point in certain areas of the UK to switching to winter tyres on cars, but pointless on a 4x4 with all season tyres. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather.
