Tailgate mounted cycle rack

Has anyone actually fitted a cycle rack to the rear tailgate?
I wish to carry just one bike. I favour a Thule brand as they are sturdy and well made.
I contacted Thule and they recommend either the Clip On 9104, or the Freeway 968.
I prefer the fittings on the Clip On, but have only seen pictures.
I am concerned that where the top arm rests on the tailgate glass, it may be within the sweep area of the rear windscreen wiper!

It is two months since I posted the question above.

I think my best option will be the Thule clip-on 9104 model.

I wonder if there is any update from anyone, as I am almost ready to order a rack.

Eddie.

Try a search on 'bike racks'

There a few post with really nice bike racks but most seem tow bar mounted.

I especially like the ones where you can tilt back the bikes to open the tail gate.

If you really want a clip on version I guess you have to look twice. If you get a Thule (great brand) let me know how you get on as I need to buy one soon and if its good I can avoid the cost of fiiting the tow bar mount.

Hi Scotster.

Yes I have done several searches on the forum and found many results, BUT not on tailgate mounted carriers.

I need to be able to tow the caravan, have a cycle on the tailgate, and be able to open the tailgate quiclky and easily.

Yes I will update you on what I buy and how I get on.

PS- I used to carry 2 cycles on the roof, but found the cycles rather heavy to lift up on to the top of the FL2. So I bought a folding cycle for me (that goes inside the FL2) and plan to put my wife's cycle on the tailgate.

Hi Bill Chiu.

Thanks for directing me to your pictures.

What make is your cycle rack; doesn't look like any I have seen here in the UK?

Can you still open the tailgate with the rack and cycles on it?

I have taken a closer look at your gallery. I can see on picture 5 that the rack is made by Thule.

Going through their catologue, I reckon you have a 'BackPac 973'.

If I am correct, what fitting kit did you use, and can you still open the tailgate; is the rack also clipped on at the bottom of the tailgate?

When I telephoned Thule in the UK, they told me that the 'BackPac 973' would NOT fit on the FL2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your picture suggests otherwise.

Correct! BackPac 973-16. It contains one fitting kit for the carrier.

973 + Kit = carry 2 bikes
973 + Kit + Adapter 973-23 = carry 3 bikes
973 + kit + Adapter 973-23 + Adapter 973-24 = carry 4 bikes

You can still open the tailgate but the load is heavy so you may need something for support.
The carrier 973 is not a perfect fit for FL2 due to the shape of tailgate. When hanging it on the tailgate, a little bit effort is required.
