Other than a FL2

If you were getting rid of your FL2 and you could not get another what would you replace it with?

(Basically I have had my worst car ownership experience ever with a modern LR, FL2 but struggling to find a suitable similar type replacement)
Interesting to see your thoughts.

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Baltic Blue

I'd find a way of getting another.
Had 2 x Freelander 2, one an 07 plate SE and the other a 60 plate XS. Both have been fine and deliver what I want. Also had 3 at work, an 11 plate HSE and 2 x 62 plate HSE and all three have been great considering what we do with them.

Audi Q5 probably the most boring vehicle I've driven in the last 15 months. X3 good at what it does but....

The general forum is to discuss the new FL2, your post title is " other than FL2" quite simply it would seem not to fit in the general section.

It's a shame you have had a bad experience, your not alone, there are many who have had a great experience though, as mine has been, I wouldn't hesitate replacing it with the same.
I have looked at Volvo XC60 though, comfortable, well specced and would suit my purpose, a little strange looking though and not everyone's taste.
There is little out there that really fits the same niche as the FL2, Land Rover have a hard act to follow with the new models and risk a great deal if they get it wrong.
Called in a Kia garage today, looking for a small car for daughter, a new Sorrento was there, nice looking, high spec but just didn't have any edge to it, it was just another me too type car for me.

No doubt you will get some advice and hopefully it will help in your endeavours Thumbs Up

Got overtook by a slick audi a6, I must admit I was tempted, but our roads in recent weather demand not just 4x4 but high fording abilities too, so only rrs d4 or less likely a full fat for me. mrs g hates the d4 so it looks like rrs again in around a year 18 mths. At work

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee would be a strong competitor for me. I nearly postponed my LR2 purchase for one, but I couldn't wait the 6-8 months before it became available. It has 420lb-ft of torque! Here's a few I like:

4x4: Quite like the Volvo XC60
Exec: New BMW 3 series
Mainstream Saloon: New Ford Mondeo - Quite a looker with the Aston style grille
Small car: New Ford Fiesta - Aston grille again

In all seriousness and ignoring the 'peasant' badge of the Ford, critics are raving about the 1.0 Eco Boost Engine that Ford are offering. 1.0 sounds weak but in the Fiesta which doesn't weigh much, the petrol turbo delivers either 99ps or 125ps and is quite lively yet road tax exempt and fuel efficient. I guess it will have more power for the considerably heavier Mondeo because Ford are offering it in that. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I already have a Defender 90 (for weekends), but I couldn't live with it as a daily driver. If I had to replace my daily drive (my beloved FL2 SE) and not with a another FL2, I'd have a D4 - end of.

Andy.

It depends what you mean by 'similar type'. There are very few cars which compete directly with the FL2 in terms of both on- and off-road ability. The BMWs, Audis, Sportages, Yetis, etc, and even the XCs, address a different on-road market. The only competitors which come to mind for similar money are cars like the X-Trail, Forester, Toyota something-or-other. These are all good cars, and in some ways better than the FL2 (they have low range for a start, which means the basic drivetrain allows the car to do things which the FL2 needs electronics to achieve) but, having come to the FL2 from a Forester, I'd have to say the FL2 is the best all-round package at the moment. And if they'd just give it a manual + low range option it would be head and shoulders above the others.

Hi Ben,
its clear from your posts that you have had an engine problem with unexplained reason for failure, have you had any other problems which are putting you off the FL?
The FL engine is a Peugeot / Citroen / Ford joint concoction which is installed in many thousands of cars of those major manufacturers all over the world and nobody else seems to be pointing a finger at the engines being genarally duff.
The only thing of note is that this forum does seem to have reports in Russian states of camshaft failures on early cars.
Whilst you are bound to be nervous and unhappy with your own car, if you havnt any other causes for concern about the FL should you perhaps be looking for a later year of FL? there are many forum members who are very happy and a good number who clearly have changed for newer models some members changing multiple times.
Kind regards

Agree that you have had some bad times with your FL2 and don't blame you for looking elsewhere but, I would find it hard to compare the FL2 to another make/model, it seems to tick the boxes on all that is important to me.

Moving away to something else would perhaps give me more modern styling but once inside and driving it the smile on my face would soon disappear.

Mine has been faultless in the 2 years I have owned it, remember why you bought it and perhaps give another a chance to redeem itself.
