A classic helicopter shape

Such a distinctive shape. It's hard to think that they'll eventually disappear. I hope someone preserves a few for airshows etc.
I thought the programme was ok, not great. I thought there was little substance about the aircraft itself and focussed more on people's stories (although some were very appropriate).

What gets me is the fact that the air sea rescue services are being privatised. I don't understand that at all (yeah I know it's about costs but can it really save that much money compared to funding the RN/RAF who are getting paid anyway?). As I understand it only the MOD pilots are certified to fly with night goggles and that allows them to respond to emergencies in conditions that no one else could manage. Can anyone confirm this?

Anyhoo, good on the BBC for making this programme I say.

As Stooby said pity there wasn’t a little more substance, say about the development over the years. I worked on these in Canada for eight months in 1988 / 89 so quite familiar with the airframe. However, a good 60 mins viewing.
I bet the privatised Air Sea Rescue will possible be staffed with ex-forces people.

You're a lucky man to have worked with the 'Kings. I've never been on one (I did have a go at the controls on a Wessex IV once) but I've watched them hovering impossibly close to Rannoch Wall on Buachailetive Mor and on Nevis. Amazing airmanship.
By the way, just because the civilian SAR will be manned by ex forces doesn't mean they'll be certified to fly blind.
I still don't understand how the civilian SAR will work. I expect it won't be long before you have to pay for rescues as well (see the idiots on any given day that do Ben Nevis in shorts and flip flops as the cause for that).

Can't believe all air/sea rescue is going to be privatised!

From your location can I guess that you now work at Wharton on what will become an even more iconic aircraft.

One of the things that gets me is that the RNLI, Mountain Rescue and Coastguard Rescue Teams who are mainly unpaid volunteers are going to be expected to work with people working for a company who expect to make a profit.
