JLR Sales Up 32% in January 2013

JLR have reported a 32% increase in sales in January 2013. Freelander 2 sales were up 57% over the previous January.

"UK: JLR sold 34,877 vehicles during the first month of 2013, an increase of 32% versus the same period last year. January sales were up across every major market with sales up 74% in China, 46% in Asia Pacific, 33% in the UK, 24% in North America and 10% in Europe. Phil Popham, Jaguar Land Rover’s Director of Group Sales Operations said, 'With one of the best month’s sales performances ever, both Jaguar and Land Rover brands have had a very strong start to the year. This reflects the introduction of the all-new Range Rover as well as the 2013 Model Year Jaguar XF and XJ models.'
In January, Land Rover sold 29,118 vehicles (up 31%), with increased sales of Freelander (up 57%), Range Rover (up 52% including prior model), Range Rover Evoque (up 32%), Range Rover Sport (up 17%) and Land Rover Discovery (up 14%). Land Rover sales were up in all major markets with record January sales in several, including the UK, USA and Germany.

Good news - they'd sell one more in February if they put the petrol engine in!

Definitely good news. I notice there's no mention of how many Defenders they sold though...

But they are making less profit, as most of the sales are FR2 and Evoke, which are (haha) "low end" models on which they don't make much. JLR have been keeping TATA afloat for two years but profits are down this year and TATA are in a spot of bother. I'll try to find the source for that...

The FL2 is undoubtedly cheaper but profit margins are likely to be higher than Evoque as tooling and other production costs are already well paid off unlike the Evoque whch is still in the early payback times.

If you look at the amount of money going into product development over the next few years it's not really surprising that margins are down. LR are doing a push on Freelander at the moment and it outsold Evoque last month.
