Agree with every word there Thumbs Up

Abuse of rear fogs is widespread, they're left on, causes glare, difficult to differentiate between brake and fog lights, confusion etc, makes front fogs on seem small in comparison.

Rear Fogs

Rear fogs are irritating and potentially dangerous when used in non foggy conditions. This is especially so in rainy conditions. Some people cannot tell the difference between fog and spray. The problem with rain/spray is that the fog light causes a halo in the rain drops and obscures the brake light.
Really, isn't all this sort of stuff obvious? It's foggy and I can't see 10 feet in front of me. Ok I'll put my fogs on.
or
Oh it's rainy. I can see there is a car in front of me but I'll turn on my fogs and render my brake lights useless. Then I'll drive within 2 feet of the car in front for security....

After all is said and done, anything that gives you even a split seconds earlier warning of say a child running in front you is going to be good,I for one never want to see and heatr a child hitting the front of my vehicle and if it did happen I do not want to sit there thinking that Imay not of hit them if only I had switched on those fog lights! I have never been dazzled by front fog lights but about 1 in 4 vehicles seem to have a problem with thier dipped lights either they have a lamp out or they are dazzling you and sometimes both because the idiot driving it thinks that high beam is OK to put on because a few £ and a ten minute stop is far too much like hard work for them.
Rear fogs are another matter, they always dazzle, I seem toremember a study being made into the use of rear fog lights and they found that they made no difference to the accident rate, they cited for this that some people see them sooner and keep up or increase thier speed as they can see the lights so assume that the road ahead is OK (motorways and dualcarriage ways) and on the oppsite side there is the following driver who is distracted by the brightness of the lights that they tend to look away from them more than they should which obviously kind of defeats the object.
DRLs are another matter because from February 2011 all new MODEL of cars and motorbike must have DRLs fitted by law, LGVs are from February 2012, so love them or hate them they are here to stay.
Just my opinions Wink

Good for peripheral vision not focused vision.

Not in my experience.

Years of rallying on night road events and then stages, including Internationals, has forced me to study what lighting setup works best for me.

The big downside is that unfortunately the experience with the Night into Day effect of rally lights means that most OEM lights I find are somewhat lacking.

The ones that have been best as standard have mostly been Volvos, and of course the Skoda Superb with bi-xenon and AFSII. The FL2 is fine with uprated bulbs, but I'd be even happier with a couple of whop off spots in addition, but that's just me.

Early days on the rally cars I had the setup where, in addition to the headlights, had two long range spots mounted high up, and two fog lights mounted low and angled out to light up corners. This was rapidly ditched and replaced with 2 pencil beams, and two driving lamps angled mainly forwards and slightly outwards to illuminate the verges well ahead. There is enough scatter from the lights to allow sufficient peripheral vision close to the vehicle. This is all when on main beam of course, and the FL2 is the same.

Dipped beam is different and verges are illuminated sufficiently for my vision.

Agree with the comments by others, generally I'm not bothered by others who have them one, unless they are diabolically aligned, though rears are another matter. Life too short to get wound up tbh.

The Dipped Beams that seam to dazzle are the ones that give off a Blueish haze, normally on the Chavvy cars, not sure if its HID conversions in glass headlights Question

The only reason people drive round with front fogs on is so that you are dazzled and can't see them masterbating to their Justin Bieber CD.

I don't use my fogs unless the conditions dictate but I also find that other cars with fogs on in clear conditions do not dazzzle me either, so meh they don't bother me.

As for masterbating to Justin Bieber, I see nothing wrong with that either. In fact I'll add Jedward to that, and with my puddle lights on for a truly orgasmic climax Razz

Try riding a motorbike in the rain and you see why people who drive with front and/or rear fog lamps are inconsiderate bar stewards.

Even when it's foggy, if you have fog lamps on should you need headlights on as well - don't they just add to the glare?

Fog lights don't give you any additional light that would stop you hitting a child or anything else.

As for DRLs - I thought there was a clue in their name - why do they come on at night?

Bah humbug!

i used to use my front fogs to light up the side of dark country lane, turning them off if i approached the rear or on coming traffic, no one else around so not effecting anyone one else

one late night/early morning driving back home from hospital when i son was in the SCBU ward, I forgot to turn the front fogs off, caught up the car in front and got a nice red sign pop up from the rear parcel shelf

T U R N - F O G - L I G H T S - O F F ! ! !

Should have checked as the battenburg gave it away as been a police car too

Dont use them now unless its really foggy Very Happy Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Very rarely have I been dazzled by front driving/fog lights, wish the same could be said for upgraded dip headlights! Can't see a problem with using the fog/driving lights as an additional aid to seeing clearly. Lets be honest, if they dazzled I'm sure you would be flashed continuously and realise.
Oh, by the way, the worst culprits for dazzling are the motorcyclists who run day and night with high beam on....

Hell yeah, let's pick on them Laughing
What is it with motorcycle lights, do they really drive around on full beam as they really do blind you or is it maladjusted dips Question . Even scooters can be really blinding at night, hell some of those LED lights on pushbikes do my head in as well Mad

If fog lights don't dazzle and are an aid to seeing its strange why the police tell you to turn them off.

I wouldn't have said bikers are any worse than car drivers when it comes to forgetting to dip.

I think you can see a problem....it's called fines for breaking the law! Smile

BTW all new bikes have dipped beam on permanently...no light switch. Because the average bike headlight tends to be slightly higher than car lights it can look like they are on main beam when they are not. I noticed this when pulling up behind cars at traffic lights and seeing the driver shade their rear view mirror as if I had main beam on. John

It ain't strange, the law is an ass sometimes but has to be upheld.

The Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 regarding "Front Fog Lights" describe them as:

"A lamp used to improve the illumination of the road in front of a motor vehicle in conditions of seriously reduced visibility."

They go on to say that prohibited use is when:

a): Used so as to cause undue dazzle or discomfort to other persons using the road

b): Used so as to be lit at any time other than in conditions of seriously reduced visibility

c): Save in the case of an emergency vehicle, used so as to be lit when a vehicle is parked

That's why (a & b) the driver above was told to turn his off 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)
