After a recent cold spell, I began to wonder if my LR2 had a block heater. In Canada block heaters are quite common as temperatures can go under -30 degrees C for extended periods. Since LR2s come with a "cold weather package" in Canada I assumed I had one. I went out to look for the telltale block heater plug and there was nothing. There was also no mention of it in the owner's manual. So I called the dealer and they said that no such thing existed . In fact they said block heaters aren't available for any Land Rovers . Are LRs somehow impervious to the effects of cold? Has anybody tried to start theirs in -40 degree weather? Are there 3rd party block heater available?

I know this is no help to your problem, but most diesel Landrovers here come with a FBH (Fuel burning heater) which cut's in when the temp drops below 4 or 5c.

I do remember this being discussed before on the old Freelander owners forum and there being some after market block heaters available in your part of the world.

I suppose I should have mentioned that this is a petrol unit. Since petrol's the only option in North America I didn't think to mention it.

Very interesting. As you can see I'm from Sask and guess what same story. No mention from dealer at time of sale that a block was not installed.
Different story from them on Land rover not having them. Was told one would be avaible early to mid 2008.
In the mean time LR2 doesn't get stored outside. Predicating -42 C tonite.

Hey Saskboy, let me know how it starts tomorrow (if you dare press the button). The oil ought to be as thick as peanut butter at that temperature.

It sounds like your dealership is better informed than mine. (Either that, or they're trying to push you off for a few months.) Or maybe LR is producing block heaters in the same factory that made the roof rails (in that case it'll be a few more years).

Not brave enough o try outside storage. Garage is heated so starting not an issue. Would be nice to hear from people from other colder climates about how they are making out.

Just aquick note. LR now has a block heater for us cold weather types. Saskatoon LR asking $597 to install.

Sounds about right on fords you either have to pull the engine or dismantle a fender to replace a failed factory installed block heater.
I guess you could put in an in line hose heater C/w circulator???
