Boot Light Mod

Finally got completely fed up with not being able to see what is in the boot in my Freelander at night so I got round to fixing the problem. IKEA DIODER LED lights are basically 12v LED lights, but with a transformer for mains use. Ignoring the transformer, I took two of these lights and removed the connectors so I could tap into the 12V supply on the back of the OEM boot light to feed these low power LED lights from the same circuit. It was a surprisingly easy installation by peeling back the rubber surrounding the boot opening and pushing the wires between the body and trims. It was possible to feed the wires behind the left hand trim panel using a coat hanger to poke them through to the OEM light opening. The lights fit at the top of the D Pillar trim each side stuck onto the roof lining with double sided tape. Took me 15 minutes and the difference is dramatic…wish I’d done it 5 years ago! [NB The LEDs are polarity Sensitive and there is no reverse polarity protection…check the polarity before connecting!]

Wow looks great! I think I might get some to use for the foot wells as I don't foot well lighting on mine, whats the spread of light like?

How much were they?

How does the color compare to the standard bulbs?

Jon, the lights were £20 or so from IKEA. Colour temperature is surprisingly 'warm' for LED and look similar to the existing festoon bulbs as in the first picture.

A quick update on this mod. I was disappointed to find the double sided tape didn't stick too well to the fluffy fabric headlining and the lights fell off after a couple of weeks. Have rectified this by sticking the lights to a section of flexible plastic ruler pushed down between the headlining and the d pillar interior trim.
