Another 400 miles done over Easter with the van on the back and all is still OK. If you have a new clutch fitted, it doesn't always mean it will go again. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Well Mrs Mc took our car to TVLR earlier today, who confirmed the clutch is fubar'd. Probably due to the high biting point, as this indicates an auto adjuster failure. So next week, a new clutch is going in.....

Short lived optimism

The slippage reappeared so my earlier optimism (see above) was shattered. Pessimists are never disappointed, so with my new found outlook I headed for my dealer, Farnell in Bradford. Car has 47k on, 59 plate, out of warranty, bought from new and serviced by dealer. No hard use, no heavy towing and in 30 yrs of driving I've never had a clutch go. Most of my cars have done well over 100k so I'm confident I was not to blame for my clutch's premature failure.

Dealer listened, sympathised and without any suggestion from me, said they'd seek a goodwill payment from Landrover. Sadly LR would not budge. Their best offer was £500 off a new car. (Not sure if LR customer care do Logic!). Basically, I was on my own for the full cost Big Cry

The flywheel was apparently fine so only a clutch plate, release bearing and master cylinder. Final bill? £695! Ok, still peeved at having the fault at all but I was expecting a higher figure. Dealer applied its own loyalty discount so I'm very happy with their role in all of this. Car is driving a million times better.

As an added bonus, my stop/start had gradually stopped working (accounting for low temps. etc.) and I'd assumed the battery was on its way out. After the clutch replacement stop/start is fine again. Coincidence or is there a link?

Thumbs Up
I read on an Italian forum that a person has put a modified clutch (different manufacturer) on his FL2 and has done more than 80 000 km on it ! still going strong !
http://www.fl2italia.org/forum/viewtopic.p...p;start=90
his forum name is Airaldi.
maybe there is an alternative after all ? apparently its not the plate which is under dimensioned, but the springs !
could be worth investigating ?

Had to laugh that we should be impressed by 80k on a clutch and even more so from a country reknown for unreliable cars (has anyone ever owned an Alfa?). Is it unreasonable to expect 100k + from a clutch on a vehicle sold on its toughness and engineering but rarely, if ever, used to its full? You can't help thinking economics comes before engineering here.
'Yes, of course we can make that better but how do we make more money if it just lasts?'
'Good point, I've got these springs out my child's bouncing toy, that should keep the cash coming in'
'Well done, lunch everyone?' (Extract from JLR drivetrain focus group minutes Aug 09, just before they made my FL2)

Three. Never had a clutch go on one though! In fact they were pretty reliable. Last two didn't even rust...!

True! First one was like a colander, but the others were ok. They weren't that old when I sold them though.

England 2013 Freelander 2 TD4_e GS Auto Sumatra Black

I have been reading a few threads about clutch slippage. Mine is fine so far. The biting point is about halfway on the pedal. Is the automatic adjuster in the the clutch housing or is on the outside? Also, my FL2 is an 10 plate with eco stop start. Was this clutch modified for the eco stop start? Are they more reliable than the previous years? I only do about 5000 miles a year, car has got 35000 on the clock, hoping nothing major goes wrong, just about out of warrenty! Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.
