Battery explosive charge

Have just read an article in the latest LRO mag, and to my amazement, it talks about the pyrotechnic charge in the battery connections. Shocked . Apparently this will disconnect car from battery in case of collision.
Anyway, take great care when replacing batteries.

It is!! Don't crash it into water or you won't get out, the doors will still be locked. On the plus side it might float with all the airbags!

Test drove a 10 plate titanium x mondeo yesterday, nice to drive but I could not get the seat right and felt more uncomfortable than the freelander! So going to have alook in the new year at alternatives. Saw a nice 530d m sport the other day!

Spent many years as a forklift engineer.
Funniest I saw was a Lansing forklift with a metal battery lid. Now bearing in mind the batteries are at least the size of a dining table and 18" deep, some with a discharge rating of 800A for 8 hours. So god only knows what the short circuit discharge rate is.

The driver took it off charge, connected the forklift, gently lowered the battery cover and then jumped onto the seat. The seat is mounted on the battery lid, there is no insulation between the lid and the substantial terminals, big spark as underside of lid shorts out several terminals, bigger bang as battery explodes, bigger laughter (eventually) as driver is catapuletd backwards off the forklift when the lid lifts due to explosion.

Seriously I have been there when 3 have exploded, and seen the results of quite a few more, usually there is a poor connection inside the cell, this heats up during charging, and the cell top is found next morning buried in the roof. The poor connection is not as much of a problem when driving around as hydrogen is produced during the charge state, rather than the discharge state.

I have a Friend who was near blinded by an exploding battery on a HGV,
Also one one blew up in our workshop ( too close to the bench grinder Rolling Eyes ), made a huge bang and showered pieces everywhere but nobody got hurt luckily. At work

It happened to me some years ago. Using the angle grinder in my garage. Clean forgot about the MGB battery being on charge in the corner of the garage behind me. Sparks were going over my shoulder. All of a sudden, a massive "BANG" behind me, showered by bits of plastic etc. Luckily I was wearing overalls and a baseball cap, so no acid burns, but I was collecting bits of battery plastic from around the garage, the eaves, the roof beams, etc, for more than a year later! Should have known better! Rolling Eyes 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)
