Cold Starts

On the last couple of mornings, when the air temperature has dipped to about -4 overnight, I've had the same minor glitch with my 2011MY SD4. I press the start button, all the usual lights come on except the glow plug light and nothing happens. I hold the button down and still nothing. Release, try again and it starts. Is it me or is there a problem. I'm going to the Alps in Feb and I could do without a non starting car out there!

How long are you waiting before retrying? Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

No need to ever hold the button down to start, just a press and the rest is automatic.

It's in the owner's handbook. '....briefly press and release the start button. There may be a delay whilst the glow plugs warm up.......'

except the glow plug light

I'm not certain our glow plug light comes on during the delay...I don't usually take notice to be honest, just wait the 5-10 seconds it can take to start cranking Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

I had this problem on mine for the first couple of winters of ownership, press the start button, no glow plug lamp but would start after a bit of cranking, the cure for easier starting was to press the start button without depressing the clutch, this would bring the glow plugs on briefly then when it went out go through the normal start proceedure with the clutch down and it would start fine.
But after one of the services last year, which included a full download of updates, hay presto I now get the glow plug lamp for a few seconds (depending how cold it is) before it starts cranking and firing up.

Interesting - mine is also an 07 and has no delay. Two different dealers have told me that the early ones don't have this and that I should adopt the manual delay system you describe.

Actually I don't think the dealers have a clue. I suspect either that the software is not working or the glowplugs are u/s. It hasn't been a problem so I haven't pursued it.

Not surprised. Let us know what difference you detect once it gets colder again!
