A close call for the van driver who decided not to bother giving way

Don't you mean Corsa pulls out onto roundabout into path of Fiat 500 signalling left to exit? Td4 XS manual, Orkney Grey, MY2014

Easy to conclude that when you don't know the roundabout. The Fiat wanted to go left but left it way too late to get over and did not indicate until very late. That Fiat had come from around the other side of the roundabout and had ample time to move over properly and no other cars were in its path to prevent such a move.

From where the Corsa was (sun blasting in eyes too which makes it tricky to spot a late indication) you would expect the Fiat to continue around the roundabout and go on elsewhere. To take that exit, the Fiat needed to be indicating and moving over way before then. Instead it just indicated late and cruised over!

The Corsa was a little too eager off the mark and perhaps should expect the unexpected but the Fiat was in the wrong. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Sorry Doc, your batting on your own on this one, the Fiat was on the roundabout, had priority, the Corsa was taking a chancer. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

I'm sure it doesn't but following the textbook definition rarely works out in reality (such as the adopted meaning of flashing lights as opposed to the textbook meaning). Believe me, I would be the first to complain when moving over if someone pulled out but I stand by what I said because I know that roundabout and I was there and could see the Fiat coming.

If I were in your shoes I would be saying the same thing but I had the benefit of being there and knowing that roundabout. This might help: The first 2 photos show the front and rear views from where the majority of people indicate and begin to move over from the right hand lane. It was clear for the Fiat to do just that.

The second 2 photos show the front and rear views from where the Fiat started to move. You can see the proximity to the lanes we were moving out from and although the Corsa should have been more alert to late indication, I honestly think it is more than reasonable to assume that a car in the right hand lane at that point will continue around and not move over.

In any case, if I find myself in the position of the Corsa, I will be on the lookout for this kind of thing.

The corsa didn't have a clear view of the traffic , he shouldn't have moved . Not knowing the roundabout isn't an excuse, I drive on roads that I have never been on before and I don't pull out when I can't see. Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

I do agree that the Corsa took a chance but as above, I think common courtesy would see an earlier indication and movement. I would have certainly indicated and moved earlier than that and to be fair, given the photographs, I think any of us on here would do the same.

The Corsa drive could see. You can see that he is slightly ahead of me and from that angle would be able to see traffic on the roundabout without me blocking his view. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby
