Turbo issues

I had a problem this weekend with there being no power in 3rd gear over 3.5k rpm. The engine wasn't (yet) in limp mode but when it did eventually go into limp mode i ended up with the OBD error message P0299 which is for the Turbo underboost.I've booked it into the garage today but I'm worrying it might be a real problem with the turbo.

has anyone had to change the turbo on theirs? Whats the cost likely to be? I checked on parts vendor for a new turbo and it about over 1500 quid... Big Cry

I'm hoping its just a loose inlet pipe or something...

Does anyone know when the turbo starts to have an effect on the FL2?

If we are talking about +2k, then I do most of my non motorway driving in a non turbo FL.

Is there any way to make it boost earlier (yeah I know that it relies on exhaust gas)?

Drive everywhere in first gear?

Like any VGT system, the vanes are wide open by default, in order to produce maximum boost any time and to maximize efficiency. They are only closing when the pressure is too big.
So, like you said it relies on exhaust gas and if you want maximum efficiency, keep the engine over 2K and you'll have it.

Hmmm, 2K is about where that clever little green light tells you that for best economy you should switch up a gear. So are we saying that the engine will be running more efficiently if i ignore the green light and drive around at +2K Shocked

As I've said in other occasions, the turbo diesel engine is more efficient when the pressure inside is greater.
So this translates in it should be driven on boost.
And this means, yes, driving like you've stole it, quickly build up speed, keeping it not lower than 1.8-2K and once reaching your target speed, only then, keep it there with minimal gas/boost/RPM. But on accelerations, not lower than 2K and quickly.
The idea is to keep it on boost around the max torque point, which on FL2 is around 2K.

An interesting reading here: http://www.tdiclub.com/TDIFAQ/index.html
Take your time and read thoroughly... It's worth it.
It talks about VW TDI engines, but the principles are the same.

Razz Thanks Alex

A little busy right now (they make me work), but I have book marked the article and will give it a long careful read.
