Freelander 2 GS Auto Reduced Engine Power

Was congratulating myself on two and a half years trouble free motoring. Should have known better.

Start engine and immediately get 'Reduced Engine Performance' alarm. Stop and restart and no alarm comes up.

Car pulls great as usual for about 15 miles then goes into limp mode. Stopped car and restarted and all is fine for rest of day.

Took car into dealer for a check and they found a 'pipe attached to the EGR valve had split. Soot blown over engine'

Fixed and away I go.

Yesterday exactly the same thing happened with alarm on start up. Switch off, restart and ok for 10 miles then limp mode. Switch off and restart all OK. Fine for rest of day.

Exactly the same again today. Had to stop on hard shoulder of A1M but resarting cleared the problem

Car back into dealer next week.

Did not get codes off the dealer last time but will next week.

Why should switching engine off and then restarting clear the limp mode?

If an engine sensor is activated, does switching off and restarting reset the sensor?

Glad its under warranty

BJB

I have never had the warning for regeneration of the DPF and the car gets regular runs out of town but it does seem to be associated with exhaust gases and system with the reference to 'black soot' when thy replaced the cracked pipe. Oh for the days when you could fix a car yourself with a toolbox and the latest copy of Car Mechanics. Showing my age now.

According to bjb134's profile he has a 2010 TD4 which is unlikely to have a DPF filter as they only became standard on 2011 MY vehicles.

Turning off and restarting is a fairly well known procedure to clear faults such as limp mode. The next stage after a stop and start reset is to disconnect the battery and leave for about 10 minutes and then reconnect and start the vehicle, this has the effect of forcing the car to reboot and often clears faults.

Thanks for that. Your right, my car is a 2010 TD4.

If I did the disconnect battery idea, would this clear any fault codes in the car memory. With the car in the dealers next week its not something I would want to do at this stage.

Just shows you are never too old to learn

Not 100% sure about whether fault codes are cleared from memory. Probably best to avoid the battery disconnect option unless the stop and restart options fails.

Yes I will leave well alone until it goes to the dealer.

I will post what they find. It may add to the general knowledge pool on this forum.

Well dealer has had car for two days and cannot find the cause of the problem.

The stored fault codes still point towards EGR area but apparently there is nothing to see. At moment they are checking associated wiring (?)

Have got a Range Rover Sport as a courtesy car and looks like we will have it over the weekend and into next week.

I have the stored alarm numbers found by the dealer.

2297 - 21 Oxygen Sensor
2562 - 63 Boost Control Position Sensor
0045 Turbo / EGR solenoid and EGR high reading

If anyone has any clues or observations would be grateful. Dealer apparently is down to checking wiring and circuit diagrams but not working on car until next week. Any thoughts Alex

Hi bjb134,

I think your dealer is doing right - 2562-63 and 0045 should point to turbo actuator and 2297-21 (signal amplitude below treshold) confirmes lack of oxygen in exhaust (coming from low boost pressure generated by the turbo). You might have wiring problem or turbo actuator on its way. I see no relation between EGR system and these codes. M.

All errors lead to a malfunction from the turbo system.
There is a Special Service Message (48477) that tells about problems that could appear because of a seized turbo actuator arm.
I've posted it here: http://www.freel2.com/forum/post156399.html#156399

In your place, I would erase the error codes, I would go for a drive with the car and when it happens again, I would (re)read the error codes.
Then I will go from there. If they are the same, then I will take a look a the turbo and its variable geometry to see if it's moving easily.

Thanks Alex and Michael

I am not trying to second guess the dealer or tell him his job, but just want to understand more about the problem myself. Your input gives me the information for when I speak to the dealer next week.

Much appreciate you both taking the time to help.
