Oh! they didnt say it was on fire then?

They said "good news is weve put the fire out, bad news is we cant get it started!!"

They lifted the bonnet and showed me where the fire had started and spread.

I wonder if the outcome of this incident was directly due to a 'modification'.

if so, let this be a stark reminder......... Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Probably not connected as age of car different...but Freelander 2 recall notice from October 2008

BOOSTER HEATER - POSSIBILITY THAT VEHICLE MAY CATCH FIRE
VIN: ALFA27B47H000100 to SALFA24C48H111695

Build Date: 1/2/07 to 23/5/08

Defect:

It has been identified that the controller circuit of the Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) the supplementary cabin heater may short circuit. This normally results in draining of the battery, and a non start situation. Additionally, the short circuit may lead to a distinct smell from hot/melted components which in extreme circumstances may develop into a fire. It is noted that, all of the above symptoms can occur when the vehicle is in use, or parked unattended. Shocked

I suspect there was a smell of hot/melted components in this case, but thats just a guess. Rolling Eyes

Is there any way to find out if your car may have had this fixed? I have an 08 plate and am slighty concerned...

Yes. Remove the battery cover and hopefully you will see a large cable and fuse connected to the Batt +ve termnial. Thumbs Up Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.
