http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic13920.html post 4.

I would actually recommend fitting a heavy duty strap to the engine as per the photo & an additional one to another earth point on the body.
30-60 amp cable would most likely suffice for the body strap.

Earth points and voltage drops have significant effects on a cars overall electrics

What would be useful to know is where the earth point for the wipers is, must confess I have never looked for it.

So many makes of cars in the past have suffered electrical issues linked to the wipers, Vauxhall as an example for the ignitions were a classic where the earth point for the ignition was on the wiper earth point which caused havoc on many models and was so often overlooked.

Thanks Old Geezer.
Voltage drop at start up will have an effect on the electronics, and as there is only one earth path at the moment(-ve in electrical terms), the electronics are obviously struggling as the fitted earth has probably got too high an impedance for the system.
Putting the extra strap on will lower the impedance generally, and make the system work better.
We presume the electronics have been designed with EMC in mind, so hopefully this will help.
Always looks good on paper, but LR haven't thought about it by the looks. Theory is one thing, practical usually shows up flaws that weren't considered.

this may help

scope trace will give you an idea of voltage drop. I will now take a picture of another scope reading when the weather drops cold as I checked it for myself after fitting cable but never thought of taking another picture of the final result. Thumbs Up

Considerable drop.
Lots of car electronics don't function well at all below 9vish.
Would be interesting to see another trace as you mentioned.
Will add another strap, but is on a horrendous list of things I have to do.

I find mine are sensistive to the prevailing light levels at the time, the darker the day, the more responsive the auto wipe function which as I would expect it to be.

Does this tie up with those of you who are experiencing problems with clearing drizzle - is it reasonably light at the time?

Well I drove from London to Edinburgh today the wipers stayed on auto most of the time but I did have to speed them up when overtaking lorries. In all fairness they struggled to cope, but it was very heavy rain.

"In all fairness they struggled to cope"

They shouldn't ! they actually have what's called a monsoon mode so if you overtake and there is an absolute deluge the wipers give the appearance of going nuts ! they actually go so fast that the wipers just clip the screen edges making a noise but its normal.

Never had a problem with the Auto Wipers, sometimes I've had to adjust the speed on the end of the arm, other than that they have always been good, intermittent when required, constant and in heavy rain they've sped up as required, must have been lucky as both my Freelander 2's have been been like this as have the Parking Sensors.

Had a quick look today to see how to route an extra earth cable from front gearbox area up to the -ve battery post. Fitting to one of the m8? bolts on the gearbox is no problem but couldn't find a way to get the other end of the cable to the battery terminal, all direct routes seem to be blocked. Must admit I didn't get under the vehicle (drive was wet and muddy) so any further info on a possible route? 11 GS Bali Blue
07 GS FL2. Usually muddy. Gone
Numerous LRs since 1963
