What's the reason for the clutch and DMF issues? Towing? Boy racer driving?

DMFs are a fairly complex bit of engineeering, at least they seem to confuse vehicle manufacturers as few of them make a good one. the ideas right but I guess the bean counters dont allow the engineers to build them to the true quality needed At work

France 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Narvik Black

Design! Basically the DMF is a form of shock absorber which evens out the pulses produced by a diesel engine to make the power delivery smoother and more comfy for us poor little cosseted darlings!
It does this via a flywheel which has two parts dampened by springs and rubber which eventually wear out. Like a clutch, how quickly they die is down to how they are treated. Towing in itself is not a reason for DMF failure but the easier life it has the longer it lasts. Hard starts with a very heavy load will not help. Pulling away smoothly and gentle gear changing will help a lot. It is said that letting the car travel in gear at tick-over is not good.

Just about any manufacturer that has used DMFs has had issues with them so Land Rover are not on their own here. having said that, my old TD5 90 complete with DMF did a very high mileage including some tough off roading with no issues. John

For them that don't know how a DMF works or look like here a good 3D video.
