Thanks for tips everyone, just gonna need to take my tablet to a Soldering Specialist because I'm not so skilled in soldering.

And Laukke, I'm going to copy your button solution Very Happy I hope by the weekend everything should be done, I'll post here my results.

One additional hint for fine tuning the on/off button. My button had slightly too short recess to operate the switch.
I grew the height with help of UV activated glue. it was easy to put several layers of the glue on top of the switch. I gave few seconds UV light from a LED for each layer until height was good.
Would it be helpful to attach some pictures?

Despite having an 09 SE with Land Rovers own Sat Nav built in I am tempted to fit a android device so I can run my beloved Igo primo Sat Nav software.

Now I'm quite happy rooting android devices and the like but auto electricals isn't my forte. I've had dual core android devices in the past and they are a bit sluggish until they fire up and then operate the sat nav fine. Compare this to my quad core Samsung S3 which can run igo primo at lightening speed. So I would advise anyone doing this to go for a quad core device given they aren't too much more money.

How easy is it to mount and connect to an exisiting 12v supply. I could also live with the device itself reading out sat nav instructions I suppose but if connecting it up to the car system isn't that hard then that might be an option. Is having side connectors really a pain and for a quick fix should I definitely go for long edge?

By the way what leads go from the under the seat DVD drive to the display?

Could you potentially retrofit something to replace that unit?

Gents, can the GPS in one of these Android tablets be used for the purpose of navigation without a monthly subscription to a telecommunications provider of some sort? MY10 TD4 SE Auto

impact - once you have 'purchased' the android compatible application (Tomtom, Garmin, Igo and a host of others work on this platform) and also 'purchased' the relevant map for your area then you are good to go. If the device has GPS it will simple fix to a satellite and run.

If you want TMC (traffic information) you have to purchase a device that has it in built. then there are two options. One option is to get the information from the internet so the device will need some form of connection maybe via Bluetooth to your mobile phone. Some devices have either a built in or external FM reception for TMC where it gets the traffic from a radio station that transmits it.

On my Samsung S3 phone I use TMC via the internet using my mobile data allowance. On the android device I purchased for my previous car I had an external FM receiver which got the traffic news. I found the latter a bit flaky. But you still don't need a subscription.

An application such as Igo primo knocks spots off Land Rovers offering. You can configure it to show 3d buildings (as you whizz by the likes of Leeds Uniteds ground you see it on the screen) and it's general configurability is far superior (text to speech commentary is great).

When retrofitting an Android tablet to Freelander 2 the modifications to the car electrics does not need to be very massive. Basically stealing +12V from the cigarette lighter socket is the needed intervention. A very simple way is to put a suitable center speaker for the nav voice (unless you do have already occupied the slot with help of nine speaker audio system). You can choose between constant power supply or ignition powered system by selecting either one of the lighter sockets.
The speaker needs probably an amplifier but thats not so complicated.
More tricky issue is the small size requirement beyond the screen area (width 188 mm) which narrows heavily the possible choices for the tablet

No real need to use the lighter sockets unless you want to disconnect. Run a lead from a piggy-back fuse holder in the fuse box behind the glovebox, and earth to a suitable bolt (there's a handy one just by the glovebox). Details at http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic12741.html

Thanks for all the advice.

The only thing stopping me is which device to get. I put a double din unit in a Focus a couple of years ago and it was great for sat nav nut the interface was pants as was the radio and media control. It was a Windows CE device and even though I did reflash it the menu system was terrible.

I mention radio and media as I might be tempted to get a device that allows me to store a load of media (songs) and also on my wish list a decent radio to use instead of the c**p non AM / non digital device I inherited

hey Brian, I took out the existing power plug and just soldered the wires directly to the two power pins on the circuit board, circled in red on the below image. Just had to check first which pin was positive and which negative.

Hello to everyone again, I've just fitted the tablet in the dash but my radio doesnt turn on anymore, the only thing I did was to remove the satnav, what can be doing this?

Edit: When I plug the center connector and the optical connector from the satnav the radio works again! Exactly as described in this topic (http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic14530.html) Any help?
