Transmission whine?

Hello good people.

I have no clue generally speaking about mechanical or technical aspects so I defer to your knowledge. Basically, whilst driving the other day, my Dad was a passenger in the back and he claimed that the noise he could hear sounded a bit iffy. I usually drive with music on and have never noticed anything.

After finding a quiet stretch of road, I accelerated from standing and then slowed down again and there is a definite noise (albeit not intrusive) from the rear of the car that builds up with acceleration and then duly winds down as you stop. It sounds a little bit like a whining noise so I thought of transmission whine as a possibility.

Never noticed anything like it with the manual FL1 I had so is it an auto thing? 60 plate SD4 XS, Stornoway Grey, Arm rest pack

Rear diff pinion bearing whining probably, just had mine done, went from no noise to extremely noisy over 300 miles.
4 hour job to renew by dealers around £600 ish, unless its done under warranty.

Interesting one Mona Geeza. I have the original warranty left until December 2013 so for now I shall keep an ear out for it getting any worse and book it in at some point when I get a moment to spare!

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this please? 60 plate SD4 XS, Stornoway Grey, Arm rest pack

As Mona Geeza has stated, if it is the Pinion Beraings it will become very noticeably very quickly, mine went from "is that a whine" to "YES IT Censored WELL IS" in under 400 miles, it will become more noticeable as you come to a stop at low speeds.

And is this noise the more common issue that seems apparent with the FL2?

My ears seem to be a little better than most but I have been complaining of a noise on mine for about 1000kms or more now which seems to be getting slowly worse. I spoke to a (non-Dealer) LR specialising mechanic (over the phone) and he acknowledged known problems with the diff but I haven't been to see him yet. 1st time FL2 owner. 2007 SE i6 in Tambora Flame.

Well I am pleased to announce the problem has been sorted under warranty. The problem was the rear diff bearing and had I not been covered by the warranty, the invoice stated a fitted price of £472 Shocked

Hunters of Derby did the work and washed and vacuumed the car too Thumbs Up 60 plate SD4 XS, Stornoway Grey, Arm rest pack
