Low charge - battery or dynamo?

I'm a bit puzzled by the recent occurrence of the red, low charge, warning light in the rev counter. The battery is about two years old (Varta Silver 78A/780), and heatlhy.

I've checked and charged the battery, but the warning light still ignites after about a minutes drive, indicating a low charge.

Measuring the charge, gives me 13,7 V and a bit above 60 amps of charge, when engine idling, lamps and ac on, and the voltage drops to 13,5 V when all heating systems are running at full speed.

Still, the battery has no problem when starting up, but I'm concerned the dynamo is worn out to the extent that a full charge is no longer possible.

Any other ideas?

First of all your system is charged by an alternator not a dynamo.
Have you had the battery tested?
If battery is ok then an alternator test should be carried out for output.
It is possable that a earth strap has corroded causing a poor circuit.
I would have these things checked and tested before renewing batteries or alternators etc as untill the fault is traced it could cost you a lot of money and probably more than you needed to spend going down route Thumbs Up

Battery's just fine, superspark. Nothing that indicates a faulty alternator either, but oldgeezer, excactly what cable (earth strap) are you referring to? Leopard tank drivers never stop at anything.

the earth strap that turned out to be the real pain was the main earth cable from the neg side of the battery to the body !
Apparently when they cut the shrink wrap off it was corroded totally green inside and brittle !
poss caused by manufacturing process of flux left behind when soldered then shrunk wrapped sealing in the corrosive substance.
I had suggested to LR on every visit to the dealers it may have an earth problem and after 2.5 years (actually fitted an extra cable myself as landrover refused to find the fault and refused to fit an extra earth as well )! from the neg pole of the battery to the engine block which resolved a cold start issue and auto box fault but still kept blowing dashes ( 4 ) and wiper motors and windows and EGR valves and other modules.
Once the earth strap was replaced no more electrical gremlins but it suffered so many through stupidity that you can never ever trust it again.

Thanks. I'll definetily check the earth strap. Can't be a costly operation, at least not as costly as a new alternator... Leopard tank drivers never stop at anything.

Your alternator output is normal Thumbs Up Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.
