More aggressive tyre tread needed on 19" rims

Having just changed over to a freelander 2 HSE having been a long time discovery owner I have already been caught out by the continental contact tyres on the 19" rims and had to be towed out of a wet grassy slope by a tractor. So decided I needed to change the tyres to something more aggressive like a 50/50 AT tyre. Previously I used Cooper ATRs on the disco. But now I find that I can not get an all terrain tyre to fit. The current tyres are 235/55 R19 V105.

Does anyone know of an all terrain tyre in this size or if there is another size that will fit my rims and arches ? If not then I am guessing I need to get smaller rims ( missis not happy face !) so I can get the right tyres. Today I got across a wet field ok but still not confident that I won't get stuck. I tend to drive over wet fields and rutted muddy tracks around four five times a week so need to sort this.

General Grabber AT Pirrelli ATR need slight oversize 255x50x19 RRS size believe fit no problems.

Think the D3/4 size with 55 profile to big but someone more knowledgeable than me will confirm

Thanks guys. That's interesting that 255 might fit. I know the boots on my old disco were slightly bigger than those it was supplied with as the spare was slightly smaller because the bigger boot didn't fit on the rear door. Will 255 def fit with no modification to suspension etc... ?

I'll drop a Line thanks.

Others may know better but on a recent experience day we were getting wheel spin on a particular muddy slope. The instructor told me to increase the speed to 1500/2000rpm whilst in "mud and ruts" TR and bingo everything locked and we sailed over the rise. We were in a standard HSE with wrangler aw tyres.

Without that advice I would have given up I think.

This maybe old hat to some but for me it was a revelation.

Tried that last week when I got stuck at the bottom of a grassy slope. Unfortunately the front end was hanging over the edge of a lake margin with 6 ft of water in front of it. Only a reed bed stopping it going any further. The grass was that soft and wet that I had to wedge a log under the wheel to stop it sliding any further as even with the handbrake on and in gear it kept sliding forwards on its own. Had to get a tractor to tow it out in the end. Even a ford maverick with mud tyres nearly got stuck trying to pull me out. It was the fact that the continental contacts were full of mud and would not self clean that did it. I think I might have had a chance if I had a decent AT tyre on.

get some 17" rims much better imo and your not going to curb them in the town either! When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car

You get the same problem with 18" too. You can put 255 on as a few have done and reported no problems.
Their a YouTube video can't get link on just type, big AT tyres Freelander 2 General Grabbers AT.

Just spoke to a local tyre fitters. They have a general grabber AS in 255/55 R19 in stock. Not to bad at £160 each fitted. He says they shouldn't be used as they will knacker the diff. How does this work ? Not being a mechanic and think logically (hard enough for me) surely if all four corners are the same I think it's 22mm higher the diff should all be level at the same height. I am sure someone on here will tell me different.

If you put 255's on that will increase the diameter of the fitted wheel/tyre then that's going to put your speedo out surely? Not sure the diff story is quite true.

20mm is quite a bit extra width also with the 255's...I wouldn't say that's a good idea myself. My advice is to get some 18's or, seeing as you do so much off road in it, 17's Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

I know on the 18" when going to the 255 you go down on the profile to 55 from 60 to get the same Dia' may be on the 19" you need to do the same 55 to 50.

Think you'll find the 55 profile will cause rub problems speedo will be out by 3-4 mph which will probably mean it will be reading spot on to actual speed.

Have not heard any problems with diff on bigger tyres before seen plenty Landrovers with 3-4 sizes bigger running on normal transmissions.

Sure Andy at AJS will give you the true picture

I have some GG 255x55x19 on D4 alloys and you look to be pretty close might be worth trying to fit one to see if any issues with rubbing, feel sure someone must of tried on here
