You can purchase a mini SD card loaded with TOPO off road maps for the Garmin; I've found it pretty good and certainly miles ahead of the standard road maps. The draw back is the silly price, around $200 - would they get away with trying to sell map books at that sort of price? However, although our off road forays have been limited to the Victorian High Country and the Snowy Region in NSW, it has never failed to pinpoint our location and show us the way home - whether some of the tracks are passable is another matter, but it will find other routes if necessary.
