My 57 F2 had the same problem with the fuel gauge showing zero. Engine cut out and had to be recovered to LR dealer overnight. Next morning when dealer tried vehicle it was fine, and again later in the day, but as we have a good relationship they tried yet again and by chance the problem reoccurred. They fitted a new fuel sender unit and all has been well since (two years later).

Sounds like a fuel sender unit.

Its not a five minute job changing the fuel sender. The tank is of a saddle bag design and sits over the rear propshaft |

Is there no access to sender from inside the cabin like Freelander 1? Discovery 4 HSE - Aintree Green

Thanks for your replies. Any idea how much a fuel sender unit is?

It's not the cost of the sender unit you need to concern yourself about, it's the labour, as Supespark posted, part of the rear suspension needs to be dropped, the propshaft then the fuel tank.

Bleeding the tank is very easy. All you need is cheap vacum pump. I use a 2.5 litre one. Its one of those used for sucking out fluids out of areas like sumps on an inboard engine on a boat etc.

OMG this sounds very very expensive and I am still not convinced it is the fuel sender unit either.

Thank you superspark - this looks very impressive but is wasted on me unfortunately. Means absolutely nothing to me?? I would love to be able to do something like this but not a job for a woman (I hate to say!)!

Shame on you Sammie! Being a woman does not prevent you from doing jobs like that..... get a manual, a few tools and get stuck in! John
