MBM last produced in the early 90's and were part of a Swiss car manufacturing industry that once ran over 70 marques, most of which are dead n buried or now general engineering companies. Some like Zebra, Morand and Cheetah are I'm told willing to take your 'phone call and a very large cheque to roll out another one of their wares Perhaps the two most well known are/were Saurer (cars, trucks n busses) and of course Sauber, who'll knock out an F1 or F3 runabout for you if you have sufficient liquidity. Sauber's main source of income nowadays is renting out their wind tunnel and selling their design and engineering intellectual know-how. |

But presumably the Swiss could still import non-EU compliant tyres, if such things exist. I can't see the Americans bothering with EU labelling on all their domestic market tyres. |

Tyres on sale here have to have a DIN rating, so the tyre distributors focus exclusively on importing brands that comply.

That presumably depends on whether it is just the sale that is banned, or whether use is also covered. |

If you take your car for it's Swiss MOT then you are "using" those tyres and thereby if they do not have the required DIN embossed ratings on the tyre wall your car will fail its MOT - expensive mistake I'm no expert on Swiss product sales law, maybe you can buy them here and the sale is legal. But I can imagine that if for example I popped over the border into say Austria and went into one of the many American Auto Emporium selling all things Stars n Stripes and bought myself a set of 235/65/R17 Yankie Doodle Dandies, and drove back across the border without being inspected (usually no great task) all would be okay until: a) I had a crash (police always turn up in CH as you must report every accident) and upon investigating the incident they discovered my YDD's b) I forgotten all about my YDD's and went to the MOT inspection centre c) caught speeding by one of the frequent roadside stings and pulled over to pay the big fine and maybe loose my licence temporarily Then I think those YDD's would start to become a very expensive fashion item |

Life was so much simpler (but probably less safe) 40 years ago! |

And, to return to the topic, the roads were much quieter! |

I've gone from an x5 to the freelander. X5 had less road noise on motorway . Freelander smoother ride. Gone from petrol to diesel...am very impressed with how smooth and quiet engine is. |
