Do your cooling fans run on after you turn the ignition off?

Do your cooling fans run on after you turn the ignition off?
Or do they actually come on at high speed as you are leaving the car?

I thought this was normal, until this summer towing the van down south. The coolant temperature when normal was 98C, when working hard would run up to 119C (above that things get messy), dropping back down to 98C as soon as the throttle was lifted.

Ok I know I occasionally drive through muddy water and this can block the radiator, but I always jet out the radiator after every session, preferably before joining the main road. I have on a couple of occasions, stripped the front off the car, removed the intercooler and gently washed through the aircon radiator and main radiator while they were attached to the car – not wanting to loose the refrigerant or coolant.

Eventually this time I took all the radiators off for a through cleaning. The intercooler was relatively clear, the aircon rad looked clear from the front – but not from the back, and the main radiator ….. from the front 70% clear, from the back 40% clear!

Now cleaned, the coolant is runs about 75C - 83C, the fans run slowly when the aircon is switched on, and don’t run at all when I stop. More importantly the engine has more urgency; most likely cause being the blocked main radiator was stopping the intercooler from working properly as the cool air has to travel through all three radiators at low level.

I would probably be getting better fuel economy if I wasn’t using the new found power – but what’s the point in having more power if you don’t use it?

Moral to this tale – use a wading blanket if you are going to go driving in muddy water, and if your fans are running on it’s time to clean the radiators – from both sides.

As an aside the autobox oil temperature has dropped from 103C to 75C. Engine oil temperature is >300C
This is all at typical British summer temperatures of around 18C Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Mine runs when I shut down with the air con on.

Mainly caused from muddy water at Bala, it has had a good clean but needs stripping

Engine oil temp is in excess of 300C? Shocked

I'd get some new oil slapped in as if that's correct it'll have all the lubrication properties of water by now...

Coolant temp now is about right. Way too hot for normal use before (including towing unless you're being abusive/in the Swiss mountains flat out!)

Ours has never run on after shut down, even in 40 degrees in Italy in the mountains. Although previous cars have, Focus, Leon, Golf etc. Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

Mine runs on for about 1 min after shut down. after i have driven up the hill to my house.
Every-time the fans don't run after shut down I know the fan speed controller has gone faulty and sure enough I have had 3 so far !. Once a new one is fitted the fans runs for about a min.
If i carry out a diagnostic check it normally reports Fan speed controller module circuit 1 open circuit !
even weirder is the dealers never seem to be able to spot this and even tell me the fans have nothing to do with air conditioning iether ! Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter
Poor poor dealers need some serious training. Banging Head

Now you have me worried engine oil was roughly 380C-390C when towing, now runs closer to 330C Sad Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Maybe 330 degrees Fahrenheit, not Celsius...
Thus giving aprox. 165 degrees Celsius which is more closer to reality...

I believe it is an error on showing a "C" instead of a "F". Or conversion, like you said.
Although the 334 F is also a little bit too much for this engine and the work regime you've said...
Those kind of temperatures are seen only on the sealing top rings of the pistons, no way in the general mass of the oil...
I had a friend with an Chevy Corvette who's max seen oil temperature was around 220 degrees Celsius. And boy he ran that car...
The API's test temperature for all oils is 150 degrees Celsius (302 degrees Fahrenheit).

Just to put this into perspective, a Skoda diesel rental car I had in Spain last year, after 2 hours flat out (don't be gentle it's a rental) the dash said the oil was 140 degrees C.

My Golf GTI hasn't been over 100 yet. And the plant we used to operate (70 tons+) rarely got noticeably over 130, and that includes throttle planted coming out of quarries fully loaded.

Think Alex is right, but it still sounds slightly too high. It could be that the temp is taken from oil on entry to the sump? That way the main body will be cooler. If it was 330 C then you'd have blown it by now!

Maybe worth a chat with a specialist (Green Oval, site sponsor) are well worth a look in.

Did you clean the oil cooler when you had the front off? Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

The oil cooler is a plate design, takes coolant in and oil in, so no air channels to block.
Suspect the oil cooler is for the transmission oil. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Simples, have you taken a reading when cold first ?

Quite often you get really random wild readings with diagnostic gear.

Nice one OG

Nipped to ASDA about an hour ago (2 miles) water temperature now 54C oil temperature 296C !

Even allowing for the slower cooling of oil, and lets say a C to F transposition, that would still be 146C, so it looks like a software (in the Hawkeye) fault, as I would hope the ECU would throw a fit if it thought the oil temperature had reached 300C.
