Salisbury Plain

Anyone got any experience off roading past stone henge? Looks like quite a good track for our vehicles, so wanted to know what may be challenging and what to avoid.

meeting a challenger tank might be fairly challenging. I think the D3 forum drive on the plain from time to time, search on there for info At work

I am about 5 miles from the plain and cross it regular . The tracks are patrolled by land wardens and there are very specific times of the year when certain routes are open.
Having said that there is also no mobile phone coverage on considerable amount of the off road routes so you have to be careful should you need help.
I have also found unexploded ordanace more than once

The road past Stonehenge is fine, although the turn off the A303 is a bit scary. Have driven it in an Astra and a Sherpa, so you might find it a bit tame. Don't know the other lanes in the area, although there are a lot on the map. Just stay on the rights of way and obviously be sensible if any red flags or other military stuff is happening. Don't stray onto the dedicated tank practice areas - the tarmac is very thin and you will damage it and they will be unhappy. Also don't accept any offers to use the tank washing facilities. the pressure will remove your paintwork and the squaddies will ave a good larf.

Generally a good tip for military areas is - if you come across an exercise ignore them and they will ignore you. Quite often there will be several units on an area and they simply avoid interfering with each other. Troops will dress to one side to let you past, then carry on as though you don't exist. Don't worry about guns - if there is public access they will NOT have live rounds, although they may well have smoke and things that go bang.
This advice does not apply for SAS and anything involving a Chinook - just keep well away (there will be guards. They will not allow you past. They will have guns). If there's a red flag don't go there. It means there are nasty things which may kill you. If there are tanks stay out of the way - the driver has a very restricted field of vision and the vehicles are heavy and will not improve the look of your FR2 if it gets in the way.

Yes I have that one Thumbs Up , but was wondering if anyone had experience from a FL point of view since the article is written from a defender view.

I was specifically looking to see if there was terrain on some routes that we may find too much for a standard vehicle.. 2012 DISCOVERY 4 GS AUTO ORKNEY GREY

We drove to Imber Village on one of the few days each year that the public have access, to do a Geocache. The roads were in the main very good. Nothing to challenge a Focus, let alone an FL2.
The village itself was quite eerie. Very quiet. Not really a lot of the original buildings left. The church was interesting.

I think many of the roads are used by the military, which tends nowadays to keep them to a fairly high "dirt road" standard. May be muddy in the wet though.

Hey boss bob
Have you seen the tanks near Imber that have been shelled ! big hole one side but massive hole the other !

Tank washing facilities at Warminster are awesome ! and yes no paint left !

Imber Roads open during X-mas and Easter and when it snows its great fun.

Night exercises great to watch , especially when the appachies are up. C130's & chinooks always over our airfield just down the road 2 miles dropping Landrover s out the back. Thats when Formula 1 are doing their testing days on the same strip. Great to watch.

Drove across the ranges entering from the south, driving to Imber then across to Warminster. Various shot up vehicles on the way. I'll have to review the photos SWMBO took as I was driving. If any are any good I'll post them in my gallery.
